Here's the solution to your problem:

Copy this text into notepad (starting with Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00) and save it to your desktop using the name "missing.reg":

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

After saving the file, go to START > RUN > and type 'regedit' and then click OK
In the registry, select FILE > IMPORT and select the "missing.reg" file from your desktop
You should get a confirmation that it was imported successfully.

This is an instant fix ... your speakers should now work for web sounds, no reboot required.

At first it didn't work for me too. I tried so many times and nothing so I actually gave up on Allie's suggestion. I turned my computer off and went about my day. About 4 hours later I came back home and turned my computer on. I decided to double click the notepad icon on the desktop with the things Allie provided us and the sound on my computer came to life. Now I have internet sound.

I had a similar problem with a Dell Latitude D420 laptop - I could get sound prior to Windows loading by using the Dell Diagnostic Utility CD and could get sound through Windows Media Player but no sound playing videos on the internet, no system sounds (for clicks, etc). Went round and round with Dell tech support - they actually set up a service call to have someone come out and replace my motherboard! Uninstalled/reinstalled Sigmatel drivers, etc. Your solution worked instantaneously! Thank you!

Allie's recommendation worked for me; just don't be impatient.

I'd just undergone a rather involved clean up of malware. My sound disappeared, along with the sound icon on my tool bar.

I rolled back my sound driver and my sound returned, except for that from the Internet (can't live w/o YouTube).

I googled, found Allie's advice and tried it: NOTHING! ARGH!!

I looked in my registry and found my "Drivers32" key empty. Why wouldn't it import?

I gave up.

Two days later I turned on the beast, hit a video link just to torture my self with silence and BINGO: SOUND!

Good things come to those who wait.

Hi,
I have a Dell Latitude D600 laptop running Windows XP & Internet Explorer 8. It plays sounds OK on CDs & MP3 files but recently has stopped playing System Sounds or internet streamed sounds (does play videos). In Sounds Device Manager the Play button is greyed out. I have got a Mac created streamed file to play sound having installed Quick Time Player. Any suggestions on regaining all streamed & System sounds?

I had this same problem and tried everything I could find. In the end it turned out to simply be that the Windows Media Player add-in was disabled. I found an error symbol once in the status bar and when I clicked on it the Add-In Manager came up. I clicked the "Enable" button for the Media Player and everything was back to normal again.

I have been trying for weeks to get my speakers working on youtube, etc. But my earphones work fine plugged into front of my tin box.

I am running XP Pro (sp3) on Aopen MB with Realtec AC 97. The problem started after I re-formatted recently.

I have all the latest drivers and flash player 10.

All my sound works good offline except only the rear and base speakers play in 5.1 surround sound but that is livable.

The fact that my earphones work proves that the flash player is working on youtube, just so annoying I cannot get my speakers up and running.

I have tired just about everything including adding the files to the registry as above.

Any ideas please folks ? .. Alan

Hello

Copy this text into notepad (starting with Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00) and save it to your desktop using the name "missing.reg":

Copy text into notepad and rename notepad file to missing.reg?

What is that editor 5.00? some special program? how to acces it?

I had the same problem and here's what worked...perfectly

the file msacm32.drv must be in your windows\system32 directory....either expand it from your windows CD (in the I386 directory) or find it somewhere on the net. I even had an issue with the volume icon on the taskbar and it fixed that too.

good luck

OKAY HERE'S THE FIX ... i know many of you probably found and tried that wave mapper trick and it didn't work .. well so did I ... but I happened back to the page and tried what our friend suggested at the end of his blog... and let me tell you the sound was back immediately
FYI- I did search for the msacm32.drv on my drive but it wasn't to be found so i copied it from another computer and pasted it into my system 32 folder and oh man! instantaneously....I heard that windows sound... clidked over to youtube and bingo bango.. oh yeah baby! FOR YOUR LISTENING ENJOYMENT....THIS WORKS!

Also ensure and verify that the msacm32.drv driver file is existing in C:\Windows\System32 folder. If the file is missing in that location, search for other copy of msacm32.drv in the computer, or copy that file from another system.

This is my first ever post on Internet forums. I had to post this response since this is the only solution (missing.reg) that worked for me. I had audio issues with a proprietary ActiveX control. I tried everything from re-installing IE, ActiveX control, enabling-disabling various options but nothing worked!

THANKYOU ALLIE!

I haven't been able to get sound on the internet ever since my computer was switched to windows xp proffesional a few days ago.. The sound works great offline. But online. Forget it! Nothing. Plus when I tried to do that missing reg thing awhile ago when the box came up saying confirm restore key after I hit the yes button the only thing that happened was that a message came up on my screen saying cannot import key selected is invalid. I'm not sure if its the windows xp proffesional that has anything to do iwth it or what. I just had regular windows xp before and I was using firefox. My brother put the windows xp proffesional on and also internet explorer 6 and a new virus program. He took my computer to his house to work on it and he said when he had it hooked up to his moniitor he was able to get sound online. But once it was hooked back up over here the only place I can get sound is offlline. There is no sound online.

You must save it as "missing.REG" , including quotes.

OT: I have quite different problem, I'm using Realtek HD Audio Manager. and my PC never plays sounds from the internet while Environment is set to "None" , however all of the over environments work on the internet, sadly, I fancy "None".

Ideas, anyone?
at the end this might be small issue but I cbf.
tnx in advance.

Oh and, first you gotta type
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[BLANK LINE]
only then the code which Allie provided:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\...

(where [BLANK LINE] you obviously leave a blank line.)

DPsycho,

I had the same problem with Realtek HD Audio Manager. I fixed it by removing and then reinstalling the Realtek HD Audio driver. It should be available from your motherboard manufactures website, if not, then download the generic one from the Realtek website.

Hope this helps.
