If u have the disk that came with the bord, u can autortart that one and install the drivers.
If u dont. go to asus.com select download tab. and fill in the 3 questions about your system.
Think u have a 775 bord and then u find the rest.

you (or friend) simply didnt load the drivers for the onboard audio.

come to think of it.. did he eneble onboard sound in the bios?

think its on by default, but would be a tiny problem if its not enabled.

hope this helps.

ps. in future expect problems with the audio since all asus P5 bords do.

have three P5B normal bords and one P5 somthing else.. (the mind is a joy forever) and a deluxe version.
its all the same. crackle hisling or way to soft mic.

but thats a whole other story..

good luck with yours.

fill in the 3 questions about your system

Quicker, easier : Type the MB model at the upper left then click Search info.

Hello,

If ur MB is a P5GCMX one u'll not find anything matching with it on Asus website.

I presume ur computer is an Acer one. If yes go to http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html and select the model of ur computer.

This is an ASUS bord so its drivers and all other info can be found at ASUS website.

Acer is the one who puts his sticker on the case and calls it his own.

P5GC-MX:

0511 is latest bios (16-05-2008)

but for your audio problem u can install these from the ASUS website:
Realtek HD Audio Driver v5.10.0.5506 for Windows 32bit XP& 64bit XP. (WHQL)

uninstall all audio drivers...
reboot.
ignore auto detect crap from windblows.
And run setup from the fresh downloaded audiodriver package.
it prob. say to reboot again.

hey presto! sound works.

-but dont expect to work flawless-
specially when using some front connectors headphones and mic.

For my audio on the P5gcmx board I have to disable audio in the bios, install XP with SP3 to get the Hi def Audio patch installed, then I install the drivers for the audio off the included motherboard drive cd.

After that reboot and enable the audio in the bios. It works at that point. If you don't have the Hi def Audio update before you install the audio drivers it never seems to work.

After working on this for 4 days I finally find a simple solution for this sound problem. It is really suprised that nobody discovered this before. Actually, you don't need to update your driver, or use winxp sp2 or something else. I discovered that somehow windows audio is disabled in the services. So to correct this just follow this: Go to Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and double click on Windows Audio you will see that the Startup Type is Disabled. Just push Start button and don't forget to change the Startup Type to Automatic. That's all. Enjoy your sound. By the way you don't need to restart the system. I am using sp3 and the latest Realtek driver 2.72. Good luck.
