Hello,
I have an HP laptop whose internet through LAN is not working due to some problem in the motherboard.
The building top was hit by an lightning and at that time LAN was connected.I showed it to the HP service center who are advising a motherboard change..As my laptop is out of warranty , I don't want to buy it.
Except the internet , laptop is working fine..Can I run the internet through USB port using a modem...
please advice what would be best for me in this situation..thanks

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 2.0

1. Yes you can use a USB modem for your Laptop if the USB ports weren't also damaged. However, since it was lightning damage, i agree with HP, you need to get a new motherboard. The thing is, the surge destroyed your onboard LAN, but sometimes it struck pass your LAN card onto your board. The pc might be working fine, but it may fail in the near future since all those components might have been damaged. I hope this is not the case.

2. XP drivers won't work for Vista, so you need to get the Vista drivers for your laptop. I'm guessing your Ethernet isn't installed. To check right-click on "my computer" -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Network Adapters. Your network card should be there, without any "?" or "!" icons next to it. If you have the wrong drivers you'll most probably have a lot of yellow icons trying to describe the devices. Use your installation cd that came with the laptop for Vista, or try pulling them from the net. You can go to HP's site, and download the drivers there. Just specify your HP model, and OS (Vista), a list will appear with all your drivers. Download those you need (I recommend all of them) and i also recommend burning those drivers to CD for future use.

Merry Christmas to you.

Hello,
I have an Asus M50VM-B1 laptop, i was connected during a lightning storm and now when i try to connect through dial up it says that there was no dial tone. I have checked and rechecked that my modem is working properly and was not damaged, everything else works fine, did my ports get damaged or what? all the USB ports work, do i need a usb external modem? If it is the ports can that be fixed? and how much?
any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
linden
