Virus is owning my laptop!

Alright, well, here's a major problem I'm having.

So, I was browsing the web and screwed myself over. I must have installed something or downloaded something that I should not have.

First everything was fine and then my computer came to a crawl so I restarted. Upon boot up I noticed my background had changed to "Virus detected on your computer," yada yada yada. I right-clicked the desktop to change the background and it turns out the virus had disabled the tabs. It has also installed a screen saver that looks like a blue screen of death. Very clever virus.

That was the first problem.

I restarted and booted up safe mode and did scans with AVG, Ad-Aware, and Spybot. AVG found nothing, Ad-Aware found some clutter and cleaned it up but didn't seem to solve the problem and Spybot found nothing.

Since then, it's been getting worse. I can no longer even log into my Windows without booting into safe mode. Anytime I try browsing the web (I was trying to search for fixes) it stops me and reroutes me (keep in mind, I was browsing the web through Safe Mode and STILL got rerouted).

I have no idea what to do at this point. It's infected Safe Mode. I can't install programs (well, I can, sort of, but I'd have to use a USB stick since I can't access the normal web through the infected laptop). I cannot pay for any software since I don't have a credit card, so that option is out. If there is software please link to free versions if you could.

Thanks for whoever can help. This is really a problem. I've searched google for hours now and this seems to be the most intelligent forum from which to seek answers.Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

lol sorry but i must comment on this one, i want to meet the person who designed this virus because it seems he knew what he was doing. as for helping you, i am sorry to say that your probly going to have to use your Windows installer disk and use the REPAIR feature or you might even have to reinstall the entire system... good luck either way :)

I'm going to put in my 2 cents.

Yes, you could probably find a fix somewhere for this online. However... with viruses of this magnitude..... I've always just thought it was safest to reformat, so I'm going to agree with the person who commented here earlier. I would say to back up the stuff you want to keep on a USB memory stick, and scan that stick afterwards on an non-infected computer with a good antivirus program before you open anything on it. Then, format and reinstall the OS on the infected laptop. Sorry, mate.
