Uncontrollable Internet Explorer pop ups

Hello,

Despite the general dislike of the Internet Explorer by many, I came to get used to it. Lately, however, I have been getting pop ups; people want to sell all sorts of crap, but mostly virus and trojan horse detection software. It is like marketing went amock. Anyhow, I have Pop up blocker at "high" setting, Microsoft fire wall (XP SP-2), I installed Zone labs firewall, which seems to be blocking even the launch of the IE asking for security allowance but not the pop ups once IE is allowed to launced. I performed Adaware, Trend micro and SDFIX cleanups, but to no avail. What it does, at launch of the IE, it rerouts it to a (what looks like) a random pop up site. I have to shut down that site to recover the IE. I also noticed that every two pages, either new or from link navigation the pop ups re appear, but not necessarily the same pop up but a new one. It seems there is a program with random number generator to launch the target new pop up.

One more observation. When I launch IE and it shows the pop up, the IE launches too, almost normally to my home page, except, the home page looks like a pop up, no headers or controls. Once I close the undesireable pop up, the headers are recovered automatically. This happens at launch only. Once the header controls are displayed, follow on pop ups do not seem to affect the main page.

It seems the request for the pop ups are being initiated from the IE, could it be an applet is attached to it? I dont know how it got there.

Anyhow, I am pulling my hair with this one. I hope somebody has an Intelligent solution before I become completely bald.

Thanks

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7.0

Hmmm, that really does sound like spyware/virus. What programs are you using to scan for spyware?

Also in tools, internet options. Check if your hope pages are correct?

I am using Adaware from lavasoft, Trendmicro house call and SDFIX in command mode. All report no viruses or Trojans. Trendmicro detected Troj_VUNDO.JFZ which it said could not automatically remove and in the instructions, it let to the use of SDFIX which I did. I rebooted with system restore turned off and wiped out any memory ladden malware if there were any. As I said I have Pop up blocker which seems to be working with unknown websited but not in this instance.

Not sure about this line

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=192.168.0.1

I've not seen that before? Im guessing your accessing the internet at uni via a proxy server?

To be honest that looks clean, i really am stuck for answers.

Well, symantec has a TroJ_VUNDO removal tool, which I used, while system restore was off and it got it. However, it did not solve the problem. Unfortunately, I am resorting to the will of those individuals who get their kicks from causing havoc to others. I think they have little wet noodles between their legs and this is the only way they prove their machoism. I am dropping the use of IE, which seems to attract the libido of these wet noodles.

If you continue to be interested in solving this problem, I am game, however, if not, my thanks to everyone who got involved.

To tw1:

the __c00F46A seems to be a probable culprit. I tried to delete it bu I get a message back saying you can't delete it because it is being used by another person or program. The reason I think it is the culprit is that it updates itself, and its update date is today. Now the trick is how to get rid of it and how to fin out if there are other programs or processes that are using it and won't allow letting it go.

1st, try using 'task manager' if the process is running then terminated the process and then try to delete the file.
2nd, if that fails try booting in safe mode and deleting the file.
3rd, If that still don’t work you could always boot in msdos and delete it manually.

First of all my sincere thanks to all who tried to help me lick this problem. When I scanned the system for the TROJ_VUNDO.JHZ trojan, using the Symantec tool, it reported to me that they got it. Well, I have a bridge to sell Symantec for cheap located in Brooklin, NY. Anyhow, your identification of _c00F46A data file was correct and it was the VUNDO Trojan, so I googled the trojan name and the dat file name and found this other forum where someone was having problems similar to mine, although unaware that it was a Trojan, was soliciting help. A respondent suggested the use of Malwarebytes anti-malware. With a leap of faith that could have always been proven to be a leap into stupidity, I downloaded the software and voila! I lucked out. It identified four instances of the Troj, cleaned two and got rid of the other two on reboot.

This proves the absolute value of forums like yours and my last word to those with the wet noodles, sooner or later you will be denied. Too bad that actual businesses resort to those pathetic techniques to reach the eyes of what they think to be clients, but turn to be irate barracudas.

Many thanks again to all.

I am having the same problem. I have tried almost everything. I have scanned my computer for viruses at least five times, and yes my antivirus software is pretty good. I have deleted cookies, temporary internet files, and my local disk cookies. I have also tried to manga addons and looked for anything suspicious. I have looked in my files and my programs on my computer for anything suspicous. I have viewed the source of the popups and they are from www.w3.org 1999 xhtml. That is my only lead on the site because I looked at the html and javascripting.I have put the site on the block list on my internet options on both the security and privacy list. My problem first started when I was trying to find a good computer programming tutor. I had to temporarily allow popups so I could get to the link. Ever since then every time I get online and surf I will get popups including antivirus 2009 and it will say if I don't install it my computer will suffer damage, data loss, and freezing. Almost anywhere I click it will pull up a suspicous download. I never download it because it porbably has tons of viruses. I will also get tons of popups of advertizments. All of this also slows down my computer online. I don't understand how they are getting to me! All of these are very annoying!!!
If anyone has any information please tell me.

Antivirus 2009 is the virus/spyware, if the above anti-spyware program dont get rid of your popus try 'a-squared free', 'Ad-aware free' or 'Spybot Search and destroy@ all free good spyware programs that will help you get to the bottom of your problems

Your computer has got spywares that`s why get unwanted popups (adverts), you can get ride of this problem by using spyware removal tools like Threat Fire or Super anti spyware.
download Super anti spyware, the most powerfull anti spyware software that detects and removes spywares, adwares and malwares from your computer

My antivirus software is symantec. I ran my antivirus scan the other day and it detected three viruses. I removed them all. One was a antivirus 2008 popup. Another was a virus that displays ads. And the final one was a keylogger. That pretty much solved all of my problems, but when I got on my laptop today the popups just came right back. Before I ran my antivirus software the other day my computer shut down for no reason! After that then I ran my scan.

I finally got rid of them! I ran my antivirus software before I connected to the internet and it located a downloader and trojan.vundo You guys probably have vundo too. Vundo is a virus that displays popups and ads. Look up how to remove it.
