Hello,
I have a 160 Gb Wd portable disk..I use sony Vaio that runs Vista..I usually backup most of my data on portable disk..but today when i connected my disk there was a error stating that i need to format disk in order to acess it.
When i went through My computer to acess the disk.. it said windows can not acess the disk..
So im all heartbroken what went wrong here? how i can fix this without formatting my disk?
and if there is no solution .. then please tell me how can avoid it from happening again as i wud like to use it again.
I remove disk through safely remove programme so there is no chance of corruption during removal...
It was running fine couple of days back....
So please help.. a solution so i can avoid formatting, and from it happening again and yes if i can recover data?

Configuration: Windows Vista
Internet Explorer 7.0

I'm afraid it sounds if that your disk has worn out.
You may be able to play around with it off an don over several days and possibly get your data, but you may only get partially of it. Disk recovery places may be able to get it for you.
Sorry, best info I have for you.

If you don't have a clue it's because you don't have what it takes to be self-determined and look a little more in the torrent sites for recovery software at least meaning you are as lazy as a country cat

I took my hdd to a relative's place and Windows7 fried it! It worked fine the first time we plugged it in, but after restarting Windows7, the OS said I have to reformat the drive. Later when I finally accepted what happened and tried to proceed, it said "Failed to complete the format". I tried again with XP and GParted which all failed, so I checked it with Linux badblocks and I have > 244,000,000 bad blocks! I know it was fine the day before because I formatted it and copied all the data to it. It's not the first time a Windows OS has fried my portable hdd, I'm really fed up with Windows and never again will I plug my hdd into a Microsoft Operating system, that software just cannot be trusted!

Hello,
I have exactly same problem. Lost drive letter, 0 MB, no partition. There was no viruses, I care about this 160 Gb WD Passport. I'm totally dissapointed and propably never will buy any external HD. How can I feel safe with my importand data? I also get disk out from a cover and connected thru SATA than shows a DISK ERROR and system won't start. Seems like disk is corrupted...
