My son-in-law was having no problems with his HP desktop. When he powered up yesterday, it went through the normal boot sequence and showed the progress bar that appears just before Windows Vista starts to load. When the progress bar reached the end, the screen went black. The mouse cursor appears (in low res) and moves around normally when the mouse is moved, but the monitor image remains black.

We've tried another video card, with the same results.

We hooked to another monitor, with the same results.

Any ideas?

I hate Vista. I hate Vista. I hate Vista.
Configuration: Windows Vista
Firefox 2.0.0.3

I had the exact problem but Vista has indicated me that my graphic card wasnt good enough to continue performing operation, i changed it for a brand new up2date one, i couldnt fulfill the installation.. Now it runs perfectly just because i changed the periphrals of my mainboard and opted for SATA system. It a dynamic windows tho. I ur case i would suggest u to compare ur pc requirements for Vista. Take care

We tried everything. I finally pulled the hard drive, saved everything to another hard drive, and used the restore CD to reinstall Vista. Everything worked fine after the reinstall. Vista sucks.
