Hello,

I have a compaq laptop (presario F732AU) with windows vista with all service packs/updates. Recently I plugged in an earphone and suddenly I cannot hear any sound from my laptop. the same thing occurred last time when i plugged in speakers to my laptop.

This includes both the speakers *and* the headphones. I checked device manager but there are no driver conflicts and sound devices (conexant high definition smartaudio 221) seem to be working. I checked every possible sound setting of that I know of but it didn't help. The strange thing is that when I play something it looks like it is playing (I don't get any errors) but I don't hear anything.

Any suggestions? ThanksStart Free Trial. Please help.

Configuration: Windows Vista
Firefox 2.0.0.16

Hello,

have you tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it? are you sure that it is compatible with windows vista the driver you are using? if yes then maybe it is the port of the sound card which has some problems. is it still on guarantee? if yes then bring it back where you have bought it and then let them check for it..

hope it helps you

The exact same thing (loss of sound) has happened to my presario laptop. Did the suggestions help? My unit is out of warranty. Nothing out the ordinary happened. Just one day it does not work. The tray icon shows a red x showing that the sound does not work.

It did help but not thoroughly. I have to use external speakers to make my laptop sound.

I downloaded the sound driver from hp website and then reinstalled. You could look for your computer sound driver there. sorry, i've deleted the link but you could google it.

Cheers.

Hey guys
I just had the same problem. My computer was working a few days ago but all of a sudden the sound stopped working. I can't hear out of the internal speaker or headphones. The system says that there is no problem with the speakers or anything, it detects sound and doesn't show any errors. For some reason the little blue/orange mute button stopped changing colour, which happened at the same time... but the button still works because the volume icon on the taskbar changes correctly. I have tried to disbale and uninstall drivers and all that business but nothing seems to work as yet. Any more ideas? The computer is out of warranty so HP won't help me.

Hey i have a compap laptop cq50 and my internal speakers were silent for awhile. the only i could hear was through headphones and got so pissed so i started to mess with the headphone input hole and it just came on. wat a miracle huh. but yeah i am happy that my problem is solved. hope my solution is helpful for yours. try putting in the headphones plug half way and mess with the hole a bit and hopefully it breaks out a sound. do it with music playing to hear if the speaker is fixed.:)

I have exactly the same problem and roughly the same solution, the only difference for me, is certain headphone lead's (jack lead's) work half inserted into the socket and some work fully inserted into the socket, also if you have a double ended jack lead with the oppersite end inserted into a amp or some kind of device, you may need to manipulate it in the same way you did originally by moving the lead out slightly and and then back in until you get sound and without breaking the connection. (NOTE) refering to the headphone/speaker socket on the laptop, if the lead is taken out the socket whilst in opperation and the application crashes eg. listening to a song on u tube the lead, is removed from socket and part of the application stops performing correctly i.e sound, you will either have to 1: save the web page close the application; in this case internet explorer, re-insert the headphone/speaker jack lead into the socket, open the saved page, manipulate the socket and play. or 2: close the application re-insert the headphone/speaker jack lead into the socket, navigate to previous session, manipulate the socket and play

This driver is only for Vista. HP doen't provide any sound driver for XP.
