Hello,

My desktop computer froze while on the internet. Computer would not respond. After shutting down and restarting the CPU power light came on but nothing else happened. I removed all USB cables and unplugged unit. I restarted with only monitor/keyboard and mouse connected. Now the CPU light does not come on but the fan runs at high speed. Any ideas?

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3

Hey, I have exact the same problem. Do you guys all use P4 cpu? Because there is a temperature detector within the P4 processor, I think there might be something wrong with the processor so its sending a false alert, which keeps the fan running and the computer would not boot. Will any of you have a chance to replace the cpu and see if that would fix the problem?

Dell computer's fan runs at high speed and computer wont turn on until I turn the computer off & On a few times, then it will run fine.
You may be right about the CPU

Actually, I think the problem is from the motherboard. So I have replaced the motherboard instread of the CPU, and now my machine wokrs just fine, and my P4 2.8G is running at 3.2G perfectly. However, repalcing the motherboard is a liitle tricky, because the cage of dell's computer is weird and the screw hold does not fit my new motherboad and fans. So I have to drill new holes on the cage to install the new fan. Anyway, now it works and the problem is fixed.

Oh that's so cool! thank you so much for finding the answer for all of us its true. motherboards are very tricky i mean just by looking at it looks difficult so i can kind of imagine how difficult it is to actually work with it.

I had same problem also, however mine just froze after leaving it on for a few hours, now the fans and power run but no screen, I doubt it's the motherboard, is there any other possible explanations? I have a HP.

In the end I just decided to buy a new computer(laptop) I had too many struggles so I gave up. all I'm gonna do now is take out the rams and add it to my other desktop because I have two desktops(1 damaged and the other normal) and also a laptop so thats all i'm gonna do. I don't feel like spending my time trying to figure out whats going on and what can I do you know?

My computor was running at full speed. I thought it was going to blow. I disconnected all the wires put the PC on a bench opened it up and walla! dust up the gazoo. the heat sink unit couldn't breath, everything had dust on it. I vacumned all, cleaned it as best I could and i can't even hear the fan run. It's amzing the difference. So much for that problem. Next!

I'm not sure what your problem is, but I remember that happened to me when I'm using win xp. Shai I did is reinstalling the system, and it usually solve the problem. Hope this would help you. Good luck.

I only remember two of the problems, one was that the fan was not working well and the other is that in accident I had deleted the "local area" meaning no internet also, funny. but its ok though. thanks for giving me that advice but its been months when I just decided to leave it as it is I mean when I sold it I was happy but all the sudden few days later I had to give them their mone back, etc. all because the computer broke down on them. That is when I just decided to leave it as it is. no matter what I have two other computers I should pay attention to you know? but thanks anyways, Eric.

You need to clean or remove the static on your RAM memory card. Being careful not to have any static charge in your body, remove the RAM memory and, using a pencil eraser, thoroughly clean the contacts where the card plugs into the motherboard. Replace and your computer should start. I think it has something to do with static building up. Hope this works.

My computer wouldn't run thru the post up, in fact nothing came on but the fan at high speed.

I replaced the motherboard, but the problem continued. There were no beep codes, nothing but the fan running at high speed. The power switch also would not turn the computer off. It needed to be turned off at the power supply switch or unplugged.

The real problem was the power supply. Replacing that fixed the problem immediately.
