Hello,
I am usually the person which fixes the computers in the house.. and one of them has this problem which I don't know what to do.. First when I turn it on it shows the Windows XP startup and then the computer screen goes black, I tried going on safe mode but it didn't work. and I tried formatting the computer, in which case with a Windows XP CD, but it shows nothing about booting the cd. I don't know what to do I have tried everything and still nothing.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.1

If your screen goes to a blue or black screen Change your Video Card it's a Problem with ALL computers that do that if it's not your Video card ... if not that ... You will need to get your your computer re-formmated and you will pay about 50-100 dollar's to get it fixed.

When it goes black just type in your password and press enter it will log you in and if it does its because someone in your house set the computer to boot on a deffirent screen in which you would have to get to your settings somehow and change then back to start on your regular monitor because i had the same thing when i had my tv hooked to my co mputer and it took me forever to figure it out but once you log in and if you see the windows task bar at the bottem your in luck just right click your desktop and go to properties aqnd then your graphcs card settings or your regular desktop settings and switch it back to the normal monitor and if you dont have the bar like i didnt you will have to play around or just plug your tower to a tv and try to fix it that way

This is becuase the resolution of your tv may be bigger than your monitor, therefore you must bring down the resolution to 800x600 then plug in your monitor to see what resolution the monitor is capable of.

I have the same problem. I think it didn't shut down all the way last night. It does the preliminary & quickly gives the option for the F12 or F2 options but it doesn't work if you try, it just goes to the blank screen. I have a flashing cursor but it won't allow you to type & does not move. When I try to shut down my computer it's as if it's going to sleep or simply restarting. However, it will if I hold the power button in long enough (It's really pretty long comparatively speaking)

I had this same problem about a year ago & I took it in. The tech said there was nothing really wrong with it, it was just overloaded & from then on it booted up. Cost me $75 for that. I ran a registry cleaner last night & when it was finished I went through the steps to shut it down but I left before the process had completed. This morning the CPU was frozen & when I restarted it, this is where I am at. Not to backtrack, last time right before this happened my CD Rom & DVD-RW drives don't work. I want to clean it all off but it's really not that low on memory, it shouldn't be doing this. Now, my laptop, that's another story. Every time I remove something it seems as if I lose memory, I never have extra space as I figured I would.

Sorry it's so long. Please help with these issues without losing everything on my CPU. I REALLY can't afford the $75 right now.

Thanks

EVERYONE PAY ATTENTION - HERE IS THE SOLUTION! I have had this problem on 2 diff monitors now. It is not the graphics card, it is the monitor. I have fixed many weird things on computers, and I've never come across anything like this. The answer is: Turn it off, and back on, OVER AND OVER until it stays on. It will eventually stay on, trust me. From that point on, do not turn it off! Else it might not come back on at all next time!!! This happens to some lower-end monitors as they age. The monitor is old, and could possibly have died, but didn't! So be happy it still works, and work with it. Don't spend money on graphics cards, or reloads, or anything else. Just trust me and try this!!!

Hello! My computer is 6 months old. HP crap. Have received a 2nd tower. Played up 4 times. Last night the screen went black after login. Rang hp. Waste of time. I hooked up the new monitor to my laptop and it's working perfectly. The tower itself is the problem. The only place the computer belongs is in the bin. Will be writing a letter to HP.

I have a somewhat similar problem. I'm running XP on a Dell Dimension with an NVidia GeForce FX5200. About 2 weeks ago, the screen started flipping to all black -- though it doesn't actually freeze. Then a few seconds later the screen would start working again. But now it does this so frequently that the computer is unusable.

However, when I sign on in safe mode, I don't have any problems. But I can't fix it in safe mode because there is an "Administrator" account there that I can't access because I don't have the password (I have never accessed that since I bought it new from Dell many years ago; I have no idea how to figure out what that password is. Dell says it is a Microsoft issue.) I have administrator privileges on the normal mode, but I can't do anything on that screen because it keeps going all black on me.

Is my graphics card going bad? I am assuming the problem isn't the monitor since the computer works fine in safe mode.

I can report that in my case, the problem was indeed a bad graphics card. I swapped out the graphics card and now all is well.

If your computer has a password for booting up or a password for accessing the BIOS simply remove the coin battery inside the tower when it's completely powered down for 20 sec (it's about size of a quarter) this among other things will erase the BIOS settings with the password (as well as the current time) and force the default BIOS setting when the computer boots up. This should work for complete system computers sold by retail chains. Do not do this if your computer was custom built for you from separate components which had to be configured by a computer tech. When removing the battery use anti static strap on your wrist connected to a
known good ground or keep some part of your body in electrical contact at all times with the metal chassis of the tower (eg hand, forearm) while touching other parts of the insides of your computer. As for your work area choose as area that has a hard work surface to avoid static build up ( don't do this on a carpeted floor) ;)

I am having this problem it seems. my monitor will go black then back off and on over and over. my monitor is a year old and is an lcd monitor. this just started a few weeks ago. when i go in safe mode and do system restore to a time i know it was working fine, all works just as it should. i have not yet figured out what or how changes are made that has caused this. it is working fine since my last time of it a couple of days ago and i went into safe mode and did system restore. once i got it up and working fine i created a personal restore point so if this happens again i can use it to go back to so that i do know i am going back to a working time.

i am trying to pay attention to what is going on to see what may be causing this as in ....
maybe when i do my system maintenance or maybe after a windows update etc ...
i have no idea what is being changed or how so all i know to do is keep paying attention and see if i can tell what changes might be made the next time this issue occurs.

SO ... before you buy anything and if you are able to go into safe mode ... try system restore back to a time you know all was working properly.

If you're suggesting that the solution I posted did not really work for me, or that I am intentionally wasting people's time, you are a retard. Oh, but wait, I already knew that... You don't even know how to spell 'their', you forgot the apostrophe in 'everyone's' and you left the 's' off of 'works'. Welcome to America, now speak English.

The truth is, this has happened to me with several old and failing monitors, and I have gotten months of use out of them by using this trick and then leaving them on once they come back up. I posted this hoping that it might be able to help someone else too.

So you make fun of me for trying to be helpful! Who's the real jerk here?

Turning it off and on, once the machine has finished starting up, works for me, - but normally only after a while. If repeating the off & on fails to work initially, I go away for 15 minutes, and repeat again. That normaly clinches it, but I may have to go away for 10-15 minutes again.
The specific timing is irrelevant, but going away from it keeps me sane; I just turn the machine on as soon as I get home, and go back to it once or twice.

HI GUYS,

I just experience this the same problem last 2 days. After changing the resolution using the NVIDIA GeForce, the screen went blank so its like black screen and the power indicator on the monitor is blinking orange & green. At first it will do that in more or less 10 sec., but right now it will no longer show the display on the monitor.

Since I cant do the warm reboot, I need to push the button on the CPU for 5 sec to restart the PC.

I also tried press F8 during POST but there's no option for me to open it in Safe Mode, and PC will show Windows XP screen after that it went blank again showing black screen and the power indicator on the monitor is still blinking orange & green.

I dont know what shoud I do with my PC right now.

I will try Joy's solution and hopefully it will work.

I'll update you guys!

Thanks!

Have a good day to all... =)

Alright, here is the solution!! I read this on another thread here and was so upset with my Toshiba's black screen (I am a flight attendant and drag this laptop all over the world and back...I thought I broke it while going through security..where, of course they handle everything with tender loving care..lol)
Well I was just about to go online to buy a new laptop because my screen was black when I read a thread on this site and whoever figured this out WAS a genius...

This is what this person said to do.....

1) UNPLUG THE LAPTOP
2) REMOVE THE BATTERY
3) HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS TO 2 MINUTES
4) THEN PUT THE BATTERY BACK IN
5) START IT UP..

It worked immediately...I nearly cried when it started up...We are in a recession right now and the last thing I needed was a laptop repair bill..

Kudos to the person who shared this on this website...I lost the 'thread' but wanted to share it with everyone!

@mcmcnally - I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH! I literally had been working on my laptop for the past 2 days, over 7 hours each day...I was completely stumped and nothing seemed to resolve my issue. I was seriously going to give up right after I tried one last thing, which was the instructions written by you. We had the same symptoms on our computers so I gave it a try...and WHOILA!

Amazing how easy the solution was after I had taken the whole laptop apart a total of 3 times!

Again, thank you sooooo much for posting this mcmcnally...it's very much appreciated!

Black screens are a problem. I've recently had that problem and I got so scared because it was a new Toshiba Laptop. I simply followed these instructions that I have received from mcmcnally. I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you.

Anyone who is having problems with black screen after the computer starts up should really follow these instruction.

1) UNPLUG THE LAPTOP
2) REMOVE THE BATTERY
3) HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS TO 2 MINUTES
4) THEN PUT THE BATTERY BACK IN
5) START IT UP..

I have only had my Dell for 6 months and it never goes out of the house, the problem seems to have occurred due to dodgy software. My solution, after several attempts to log on and off without success, was to remove the battery. I started up with it still removed and only working on mains power. This allowed the lap top to get past the log in stage and still have a desktop to look at rather than a black screen. I immediately went to the control panel and completed a system restore. I am still waiting to see if thsi does the trick but will let you all know how it goes. It's worth a try for those of you who still have had no luck.

My problem now is fixed. I asked help from my boyfriend who's a computer enginnering graduate. He said that the OS is already corrupted. I install Windows XP again and now my computer works again. Its good that I created partition so I still retrtieve my files in D:. I install XP in C: only.

Hope this will also help those people who are experiencing the same problems.
