Laptop stuck on black screen when boots

Hello,
I have a new gateway laptop which gets stuck when booting. It gets stuck for about 4 minutes while booting. I realize that it gets stuck because I have an external HD plugged into it. If I disconnect the external it loads instantly or I can just wait it out.
I think this happens because the computer recognizes the external HD as a bootable drive and checks it to see if it will load the operating system from that source, just a guess.
Would anyone know how I can rectify this issue outside of unplugging my external?

Configuration: Windows Vista 64bit / Google Chrome
