Help connecting to internet

Hello,
i need help. i have an emachine. tried to connect to internet. said there was no network adapter. so i bought and installed it. still cant contect. in the device manage is says me ethernet manager has no driver installed well i cant download one without getting on internet. could the the ethernet manager stop me from connecting to internet. i have internet thru verizon and i could get on there web site by using 192.168.1.1 but thats it so the computer is reconizing the modem. thats wat verizon said.... if someone understands wat im talking about can you give me advise. by the way i am runnin windows xp
