Blank screen on startup

Hello,
i got an IBM Thinkpad laptop that has been functionning properly for the past 3 years. but just a few days ago, i put it on and the screen remained dark. i tried putting it of and on again but still had thesame results. what do i do please.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.3
