Packard bell external HD can't be accessed

Hello,
my external HD for some reason the autoplay won't work and it appears that there is nothing in it. I disinstalled the driver and that worked for a while but now it tells me the HD needs to be formatted... I have lot's of iles on it and I think if I do that I'll lose them... which is not what I want!

help!
