Internet Connected but can't Browse [Solved/Closed]

NelsMa - Latest answer on Oct 27, 2012 01:51PM
Hello,
I bought this computer about coming on two years ago, Up until about April my internet connection was fine. To at which point I had little to no ability to browse on any browser, Although other computers on my network could connect just fine. I could ping just fine, Firewall was off, had no other problems. Couldn't figure it out so I went with a reinstallation, after reinstalling the problem still persisted. I'm running windows xp sp2 and have McAFee security center wich I just uninstalled which did no good. I tired winsock to no avail. I've tired searching around, but the only people with the same problem as I seem to be running zonealram and reconfiguring settings for that fix it for them, but I do not have zonealram so that doesn't work for me.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I am having the same problem - internet is connected but I can't browse, also Skype is not working. I had McAfee but it is not working anymore, so, I removed it and tried to scan with NOD 32 but no success. I think it should be some virus problem because my McAfee crashed or maybe - the problem occured because of McAfee crash?

My girlfriend's computer is having a similar issue. She is running Windows XP and has AVG free edition, no Norton (although I've been running Norton for a long time and have had no issues).
Her computer is connected to the internet but her IE and FireFox are both running very slow. iTunes works fine and she's able to send and receive e-mail. Her roommate's computer is not having these issues. They are using a wireless connection and have cable internet.
She ran a scan and cleanup with AVG but this didn't fix the issue.
She also mentioned that her computer took a long time to come up after she entered her password into the login screen. Could these issues be related even though the rest of the computer seems to be operating normally?

hey, try changing the home page. some sort of the problem i faced was quite solved after this and all works fine if in parallel i keep mozilla running. can't explain the reasons but the things do work fine..... :S
Russell326 - Feb 28, 2009 11:55PM
Thanks for trying but that didn't work.
She's also getting the 'Execution Prevention Error' with 'WMI' listed as well. We went through the process of fixing it but I think all we did was turn the error off.
The original problem still persists and now there seems to be an intermittent lock-up issue as well.
She's got service pack 3 and all other programs are working normally.

I have the same issue here, Internet is connected but cannot browse. Diagnostic about connection issue says a firewall setting. I have Windows Firewall and McAfee Antivirus. Everyone showed that unistalling their antivirus worked, so i did that and uninstalled McAfee but I still cannot connect. I've run out of ideas...

I have been having this problem with my gf's hp pavilion laptop that has vista ultimate on it.. we are connected to teh same wireless network and while my laptop with xp connects, her does nothing but says connected with local and internet as well.. however, the browser does not work.. I tried system restore several times that temporarily allowed me to browse and then again, no internet.. msn messenger seems to be working just fine, though..
the last time (this night) it worked.. then i closed the lid that put the laptop in sleep mode.. after opening it again i could not open any websites.. although the little icon says i should have internet..
i'm thinking of installing xp back on it with sp3 or anything but vista that only gave me headaches so far..

Thank you! This worked for me. I had switched Virus Scans from the ISP provided NAV about a month ago, but the problem just surfaced. I went to the website you suggested and everything is fine now.
tdogSergiopepette - Mar 14, 2009 01:23PM
this one is certain the case for my pc. Apparently one of the MS SP update caused a conflict with AVG. I ended up uninstall AVG and all my browsers started to work again.

cool

ie 8 problems with vista 64 - May 24, 2009 02:10PM
Dan

i bought a brand new hp pavillion dv7 1262us notebook which as vista with 64 bit and sp1 two days ago and the internet began workign intermittently on a wireless network. i tried restarting computer, uplugging the modem and router etc etc - the usual then i gave up and downloaded ie 8 which is supposed to work with the 64. well guess what the internet stopped working completely after that. No idea why but google chrome and mozilla would not work either. i called hp support and the guy in India pointed out to me right away that IE 8 was a problem so he disabled teh ability to download the ie8 update and installed ie7 and it works great. Note that just like you i had two other laptops - both xp and one dell and one hp - that were accessing the internet without any problem at the same time the pavilion was having a problem. the guy in india, pradeep, also pointed out that my dvd had disappeared and said taht it is an itunes problem so disabled itunes. All in all it was very frustrating except for the hp support in India who fixed the problem

Uninstalling AVG worked for me....I uninstalled AVG and internet worked like a charm. From what I can tell it was upgrade from AVG 8.5 Free to AVG 9.0 Free that caused the issue,

Ok guys, /this is the thing. I have the same problem that all of you do. I have read, and heard lots of things about this, like is a DSL problem or Cable problem, or Vista problem, Firewall proble, Zone Alarm problem, Kerio problem, Norton problem or router problems etc... First of all, I don't have DSL, or Cable or Dial Up. I conect to the internet with my Blackberry. My problem started like 2 hours after I download and installed SP2 for Windows XP after I reloaded Windows. I use only Windows Firewall, and for Antivirus Symantec Corporate Edition which I have beibg using for the last 5 years without any problems.

I connected my Blackberry to a different computer, and the problem does not exist at all in my other laptop. BitTorrent works fine in the first laptop, anything download with no problem from any internet application, but Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox works only for the first 5 minutes that I am on-line, after that neither works.

I found my problem - it was because of hardware device - network board had corrupted. After replacement everything goes just fine.

Hey Guys,

I knowm this may not be the fix for everyones "same" problem but it fixed mine twice and it also fixed a friends pc as well. Remove totally whatever anti-virus/firewall program you have. Norton is notorious for blocking you out of the internet. I have seen that crappy mcafee do the same thing too, and others. Remove them and then if that doesn't do the job go to norton website or other and download either the norton removal tool or the microsoft cleanuputility and use it to remove all remnants of norton, mcafee or whatever and you just might be back in business like me!!!

Peace

How are you suppose to download them if you can't connect to the Internet ?
I'm uninstalling norton just now , I've been using my iPhone for a few weeks now on the wifi fine and all my familys laptops and my brothers ps3 work fine it's just mine that isn't working , I have the exact same laptop as my brother and his is fine too but none of them have norton so that's probably the problem

I had this problem come up with a brand new Dell Latitude Laptop- Installed Norton Internet Security 2008 on it, then uninstalled it (as part of troubleshooting multiple issues.)

After a lot of playing around I think I fixed it by reinstalling TCP/IP. not 100% that this is actually what fixed it, but I think it's the most likely contributor.

I used the advanced method.

Wow, I just had this problem a few days ago and I couldn't figure out what the problem was. I decided I wanted to look on the internet for my problem and I came to this website. I read a few entries and thought to myself that the norton antivirus program (which I had installed) was the cause of not letting me browse the internet. I went to my control panel, went to uninstall programs, I uninstalled norton, and now my internet works!!!

IF YOUR READING THIS AND YOUR TRYING TO FIND A SOLUTION, TAKE MINE AS IT DID WORK!!!!!!!

THANKS!!!!!

Open IE. Go to Tools ==> Internet Options. Select the Connections tab. At the bottom select LAN Settings. under Proxy Server uncheck the box to use a proxy server. Unless of coure you use a proxy server. The
"Antivirus - Soft" virus changes the setting to prevent you from going online to get help. I'm sure there are others too.

Ok my hubby is a golden gawd lol . I had the same problem and all your ideas where very helpful, but for me none worked. So it turned out to be a virus (post relocator number 46769. with no file type in the system directory). so he did this.

1.could not be deleted first off.

2.located the file manually in the system32 dir.

3. nuked it with a file shreeder. make sure your using D.O.D shreed specs.

Thats it. The hard part was finding it. Thanks bunches for all the info and ideas. I hope this helps someone that has had no luck with all the wonderful ideas. Good luck :)

Thank you very guys for the advice, i was able to solve the issue on my laptop. I download the removal tool from Norton and run it on my laptop. After the removal process, i restarted my laptop and now my internet is working. For some reason eventhough i uninstall Norton, some part of it is still in my laptop and blocking all access to internet.

I had the same problem after installing Windows XP service Pack 3. After thinking about it for a day, I decided it must be some kind of security issue.

I checked all my Windows security settings, they were fine. Next I took a look at my Trend Micro Security settings, and they all seemed ok. I turned off XP's firewall, no help. I turned XP's firewall back on and turned off Trend Micro's firewall, and now it works.

Some setting in Trend Micro was changed or not changed when updating to Service pack 3. If I have time I may investigate further, but according to several posts, XP's firewall is just fine. It could be that during the XP update, Trend Micro's firewall was turned on because I *think* it was always turned off before and I just used XP's firewall. It's not good to have two firewalls at the same time, at least not two software firewalls.

I hope this saves someone else from spending too much time on their problem.

Hi guys,

My sisters laptop wouldn't let her access the internet at all, we thought it was a problem with our provider, we were on the phone to them for hours, and in the end they gave up.

The internet was working fine, then later on in the evening it stopped working.

So after searching Google on my home PC, (which didn't have the same problem, even though we are connected on the same modem), I followed the advice about removing Norton, So I downloaded the Norton removing tool from their website. Ran it on my sisters laptop to uninstall it. This resolved the problem I then reinstalled Norton and it still lets her browse the net.

Thanks for all of your help
