Ethernet Connection does not work

Hello,

I bought a Dell Studio 15 laptop last month. I cannot connect to the internet using my ethernet connection, only by the USB port (and that is sketchy). I tried connecting to another network, but couldn't. The ethernet port does not light up when I try to use it, although the computer indicates that everything is working fine. Also, I get a screen stating that "the web page you are viewing is trying to close the window. Do you want to close this window?". I click yes and I am left with a large white block that does not go away until I shut down the laptop. Is anyone else having this problem? If so, how did you remedy this?
