If you don't have upper or lower filters in your reg, then the problem is not in the register. I had a fujitsu siemens laptop that came with vista. I installed the xp instead and had everything else working but the Matshita uj 850-s dvd-ram drive. The reason that dvd-ram wasn't working with xp was that I had to change the "SATA Controller mode option" to "Compatible" to make installation possible. Because hard drive and dvd-ram were in same area 0, this meant problems with dvd-ram. To get the dvd-ram working I had to do these steps:

1. Download AHCI driver (7zim06ww.exe) from this site: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-62909 and install it to c:\drivers\win\sata

2. Restart your computer and go to BIOS.

3. In BIOS find "Serial Controller mode option" (in fujitsu siemens: advanced\internal device configurations\serial ata controller:\sata controller mode option) and change it to "Enhanced".

4. Make sure that AHCI configuration is marked as Disabled

5. Save and Exit

6. In windows put a dvd in the dvd-ram and test if it works. In my case it did work.

Changing the mode to Enhanced might make your OS to find new devices, in my case "PCI serial port" and "PCI Simple Communications Controller". To get these work you need to install AMT drivers that you can find from your manufacturers website, or Intels AMT by searching google.

Hope this helped those that didn't have Lower and Upper filters in Register. For me it took quite a while to realise where the problem was...

I try for this problem from long months. This helped me after the advice from Mr.techpro

For Error 39 your CD Drive. Follow this simple tips.

I can recomonde only for MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA Device in Acer laptop

type "regedit" in run box in start menu

backup your registry file, incase of necessory to restore.
From registry editor navigate to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Class \ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

delete only "Upperfilter" and "Lowerfilter" values.Restart after Shutdown your laptop.

I also have a Toshiba Satellite and was experiencing the same problem with Windows Vista and the Matshita UJ-850s ata device. The recommendations of deleting the upper and lowe files did the trick. Thanks for the help.

What are lowerfilter values and upperfilter values. How do they look like? I could not see them when I followed the procedure in the registry.

Hello,

I am using Vista Ultimate and the DVD-Rom is not reading any audio/video/data discs for the last 5 days. When i verified the properties of hardware it is telling the drive is working properly.

Can anyone help me out in resolving the issue

MITSHITA must go by it's middle name ! I have vista 32 bit and my CD?DVD driver keeps giving me error 19. The only way I can find to fix the problem is to BUY THEIR driver doctor. That's not going to happen !! I will make sure my next computer has NO MITSHITA PRODUCT. Isn't there some way to fix this problem without having to BUY something?
