My 30gb works on docking system ONLY

Hello,
My 30gb ipod will play on the docking system, but won't do ANYTHING off of that system. Doesn't show up in itunes, won't turn on, no light or apple. . . What do I do? I have tried resetting it holding down the center button and the menu at the same time.
