Motorola 2200 DSL modem/wrt54g2 not working

Hello,

I have been having a lot of trouble getting good, reliable wireless out of my NEW Linksys WRT45G2 wireless router hooked up to my NEW Motorola 2200 DSL modem. I have AT&T DSL service.

Here is what I have done so far.

- I have the modem set to PPPoE and "always on" instead of on demand. I get clean signal from the modem and it provides a solid web connection direct to the desktop PC.

- I have the router set to DCHP and have changed the IP to be different from the modem.
- I have set up WEP encryption to secure the router.
- I have tried all 11 transmit frequencies on the router.
- I tried forcing the router to broadcast at different transmit rates as well as putting it back to the defaul "auto" setting.

The problem despite all this is that I have crappy (low) wireless signal power through all ranges, and I have significant lag spikes at all times. For example, the desktop that I hard wire to the internet works fine with no lag when working from the modem, but as soon as I connect via cable through the router, I get bad lag. Trying to use the laptop is even worse (naturally) and I have to be in the same room with the router, and even then it sucks for speed/lag.

I replaced a 2Wire router that worked fine and had signal so strong and clean that I could use it from next door. With NO lag. So, I really don't want to hear that I'm too far away, there's too much obstruction, etc., like the Linksys people try to tell me when my home office is 25 feet away from the router. From that location, I can pick up all of the neighbor's routers clean and clear (and even use an unsecured one).

Please help. I've been fighting this thing for weeks, and I'm about a day away from using the router as a chock block for my truck and getting something more user friendly.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.14
