Shutdown/Startup loop.

Hello,
When I shut down my computer I have to switch off at the mains or it will restart again, this has been going on for months now. I don't know if it is a hardware or software problem. Please help it's driving me mad.

Disable Automatic Reboot on Error

If you are suffering from the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) the PC stops due to the stop error and then, in default configuration, automatically reboots.

Chances are good that you want to know what is going wrong and how to fix the stop errors. Well, you can't just say "It's rebooting, what's wrong." With that little bit of information no one will be able to help you fix it. Instead we need to know the "stop error" and the exact wording for the reason that it stopped so that we can diagnose the problem. Then, and only then, will we have enough information to help solve your problem.

Older operating systems used to do it nicely and just plain stop... Now? Now it reboots for you because that is generally easier than it is to worry about the problem. Let's stop that shall we? It would make it easier for all of us if we could know the exact error message after all...

Click the Start button
Click Run...
Type sysdm.cpl
Click OK
In the System Properties window click the Advanced tab
In the Startup and Recovery area click the Settings button
In the Startup and Recovery window UNcheck "Automatically Restart" (in the System Failure area)
Click OK and then click OK again
Then when the PC crashes, make note of the stop error and related information

Hi XPCMAN,
Thanks for reply but it is nothing to do with a blue screen, as I said in the message, when I shut off the computer and it reads- the computer will now shut down- if I don't switch it off at the mains it will start up again. There are no error messages, no blue screens, it's as if the on/off switch doesn't switch it off. Hope you can help.

You have a Windows error on shutdown and an automatic restart.
It's still the same procedure to disable auto restart and then look for the error. If you are lucky a error will show on the screen and will point to a software or hardware error. If not - then you will need to search through the systems events for the cause:

To find the cause of the error :
go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer and select System

You will then need to look for error events during the last shutdown time period. You should look for something like a "timeout while waiting for xxx" that will point to a program/service or hardware device. Then you can either disable the program or update it.


If you hold down the power switch it will eventually turn off without pulling the plug.
