Laptop to tv with hdmi caable

Hello,
im trying to connect my laptop to the tv using a hdmi cable have it connected but it is splitting my screen, does anyone now if it is possible to stop this? is it possible to get a copy of what's on the laptop screen on the tv?

Configuration: Windows Vista Internet Explorer 8.0
