External monitor enters power save mode

Hello,
When I connect my ACER Travelmate 2300 laptop to a DELL monitor, initially the Dell will show the "Resuming Windows" but then immediately goes into "Power Save Mode". I can still work from the laptop screen but I'd really like to be able to use the external monitor. It's a new monitor, and my computer is 5-6 years old, so maybe they just aren't compatible?
