Hi Maloney,

First things that come to mind are just the basics:

Reset pram: hold down cmd-option-P-R keys just after starting up. Keep holding these down. You will hear the startup chime again. Keep holding until you hear the chime three times.

This has worked for me in similar situations, but I don't know why because it shouldn't work: hold down cmd-option-a-v at startup. It's an old key command for use with AV monitors, but desperation makes odd fixes look more appealing...

Reset the PMU: see this page for directions for your exact model of iBook: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431?viewlocale=en_US

Try starting up with the CD that came with the computer: Put the cd in and hold down the C key when you start/restart.

Look through Apple's support pages if you haven't already. You might find some answers there.

Good luck!

I haven't found a cure or solution yet i am afraid,i asked the apple shop about it and they said it coul;d be a number of things, graphics card ect,but he seemed to be just trying to get me out of the shop,i guess because the g4 is considered an inferior model now,but i want mine working again,i am still attached to the thing.if you have any luck let me know,i will also return the favour if i have i find any more news of how to resolve the problem.jamie

I have the same problem, I just had a friend that works on Macs work on the computer he replaced the fan, and put got me going again, he did solve 1 of its many problems... but I still have the problem where if I use it, the iBook G4 freezes after no more than 10 minutes of use. I restart it and I get this black screen, I get the right sounds by no action, I've tried everything.... Im starting to think this model is used up. I am 80% set on buying a new computer come the end of September, I hear around Sept 26 they are coming out with a new model. So I guess you could say I have given up.... I need my Mac to work soooo badly, but its out of my hands. By the way, I have to wait a couple of hours then it starts up... but freezes after 10 minutes of use. I can leave it on and run NOTHING, and its fine.

My G4 would not turn on. I was at a site that said hold down the command key and press the power button once. I held down the command key for a few seconds and it work for me. when it turn on I had to change the date. Hope it works for you

I got the same problem. The computer froze while using iTunes and then when I restarted I just keep getting a blank screen. I tried everything above and tried resetting using Shift-Option-Command-Power held down for 5 seconds. I got long beep and then the startup at least went until I got the Apple, but the startup wouldn't go any further.

Anyone have ideas?

Add me to the list as well....and exactly 1 month to the day after my Applecare expired....

I was able to get back to the desktop to back up anything that wasn't already by repeatedly resetting the PRAM and the PMU. I am pretty sure that this is hardware related though, so that will only work for so long. My basic knowledge is telling me it is the logic board. Luckily, I am getting married next week and will therefore be broke for the next 6 months or so, so I guess I should get used to a computer free life at home!

When you said you repeatedly reset the pram and pmu, did it work after the first time? How many times did you do it until it booted correctly?

I also have the exact same problem. My ibook G4 froze for the first time since I bought it in 2004. After shutting down, the blue screen appeared with the apple logo, everything seemed to be booting ok, and then horizontal lines like on a TV appeared and the screen went black. Now everytime I boot I get the fan, the startup tone and a black screen. I tried doing all of the suggestions with no luck so far.

Dude, my friend just called about his iBook display failing. I gave him the old (Cmd + Opt + a +v) trick and it blew his mind. Made me look like a god thanks to you. I told him to call if he's got anymore brainbusters.
:)

Thanks again, saved his butt while he's on tour...

I think I found a solution, albeit a temporary one. After reading the article in the following link:

http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/

I placed my ibook on my knee and gently pushed down on both ends while booting up. According to the article, a chip from the logic board lifts from the board causing the problems. By using something (my knee) to push from the bottom while pushing down with my hands, my machine magically booted. When I took the pressure off, it started to fail, but as long as I kept my knee in place, i was able to boot up and save my important files.

The article talks about opening the back of the mac and placing a shim between the bad chip and the back cover. This extra shim pushes the chip in place when the cover is put back on. It certainly is not a long-term permanent fix, but it is enough to get your files back and maybe work for another few months.

I would agree with the logic board issue, I had mine replaced twice on my Ibook when it was still under warrenty, and I had the same issues you are describing. I nearly had a heart attack at the time, since I used it heavily during school and I needed all the assignments for the last semester.

My fan never turns on, and this thing is hot all the time.

Hey Thanks for the tip about putting the ibook on your knee and rebooting - that brought my screen back on temporarily and I followed the directions on that link you posted and was able to repair the problem.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

True well I used a flat surface thick and strong to hold the force.. and I pressed firmly down on the lower area under the keypad. It worked thing popped up on the screen and I got thing working with all the files intact!

This is a great solution. Albeit temporary, I had experienced the video glitching and when I could get
any video by pressing with my hands on the bezel I eventually booted into the ? mark folder. Couldnt
get the system disk to install. Until I kneeled on the darn thing for a good 5 minutes. Started up and
away goes the optical drive! Now I have the OSX 10.3 install running and my long lost Data
intact and backed up. "The Knee" has saved me serious tech time and dough and countless hours of
waiting and wondering. Who woulda thunkit. Great post.

You have to keep the pressure on the ibook the entire time. If you let go or reduce the pressure, it will display the lines and then fail. I plan on putting the shim inside my machine. I will keep you all posted if it works.

I got it to goto my password that time, then the galaxy screensaver thing came up for leopard then it crashed, but hey its the best progress iahve seen in months and months, well done to all involved.i feel quietly confident that it will work again if i try putting the wedge under the board.is it risky?

Wow! Cmd+option+A+V did it on my 6 year old iBook G3. Got the blank screen of death after some crazy lines across the screen. Couldn't get it to come back. I know that a weak battery can cause this too - as it happened with my G4 iBook and has not happened for a year with the new battery. What a lifesaver

I'm having the same problem. colored lines, blacked out screens. Resetting the PRAM worked for a while, then when that stopped i did Ctrl+Cmd+Power, and that also forced my screen to come on occasionally. then it stopped completely and i wasn't able to turn it on until i took out my battery. I am still getting the colored lines, but my computer won't get them as long as i have it on a flat surface and don't move it at all. The second i move it the colored lines come back and it freezes. It works as long as i don't move and I think its worth because i can use it. I also had the loud fan, and the bottom left side of my computer would get very hot suddenly. I really hope this works for you as well!

Hello everyone.

I woke up this morning to find my ibookG4 (2004) doing this to me:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v166/boilingchill/Image124.jpg

Everything seems normal (sounds, chimes) and when it starts up, it changes to a blue screen for a second and then reverts back to the static lines. I belive it actually starts up properly. The only catch is all i get are lines!!!

I tried using the VGA adapter to connect to another monitor and its the same so i reckon its not the display. I also did the cmd+option A+V and P+R method to no avail.

I know I'm really silly for not backing up my files and all but all i need is for it to work for about 30 mins for me to back up all my pictures and work (yes yes i'm a sentimental dude) and i can throw it off the 10th storey.

Any ideas anyone? :(

This was a VERY helpful thread. My G4 laptop is doing the same thing; first had the technicolor freeze, now black screen. Has any had their laptop repaired through Apple? I'm wondering about how much is the cost for the shim fix, etc. Sure how the Square Trade warranty is enough to cover...
Thanks!

Most of these issues are related to the nvidia chipset...they used an inferior pairing of materials on it's manufacture up until jun. jul. 2008, when they had to fess up to apple and change the architecture...however, they were allowed to keep shipping to apple the "defective" chipset until inventory depletion...

so if you got a powerbook that has a video card that died, (heat breaks the seating of the chip) there may be a class action lawsuit in the making, as they may be required to recall all the macbook with the "defective" chipset...

follow this link to reasons and what's been talked and done about it, so keep your receipts and paperwork and try and confirm if you have the "defective" chipset

For what its worth i was having similar issues with a power book G4 12 inch 1.5 ghz, the computer seemed to be booting up, but no screen, black with lines. i tried everthing the pram thing, the av thing, EVERYTHING. i was trying a bunch of stuff for the like the tenth time when i went to force reboot (control + command+ power) i accidently held down the control and command keys while it booted up, and the screen instantly turned on. couldnt find a boot key that matched this, and it could have been a coincidence, but for what its worth. if youve read this far in the thread, youre probably willing to try anything. UPDATE: it did not perminently fix the problem. screen started to get flaky soon after i started post.

Great work everyone,
S, your solution did the trick for me, thankyou.
Ultimately though i'm resigned to the fact that my 5 year old laptop is a goner.
Above all else this a result of what my tech friends refer to as I.O. or Inbuilt Obsoletivity. When people say they don't make em like they used to, they're right. The need for a continuous demand cycle means it is no ones interest to built machines that won't eventually break. its just a question of how soon that can give diversified ideas of a 'quality build'. Sigh. Its a bloody waste of materials but i guess it does advance technologies.
