Vista product key issues

Hello,
ive just received my new acer laptop and when i come to type in the vista product key number that is clearly on the sticker under the laptop it is saying it is invalid and so i cannot validate my windows.
Do you have to use the 60 day trial before it accepts it?
Help needed please thanks
