Computer will not load past welcome screen [Solved]

wldy 2Posts Monday August 4, 2008Registration date - Latest answer on Jun 25, 2011 08:20AM
Hello,
My computer, after not being used for a few months logged into windows and the internet just fine, once....then it stopped going to web pages. So I restarted the computer. Then XP would load to the welcome screen, and the next screen it shows is the background (just before you would choose which ID to login under) it never loads past that point. When I tried to reboot and go to safe mode the keyboard would let me get it to that screen then the keys would stop working. TO fix that I had to take out that little battery inside the computer. Then I tried to log into safe mode, I got past the choose ID screen, then it stopped loading again.
I cannot reformat the harddrive as I do not have the windows XP disk, I have the key, just not the disk.
I did find programs on the computer before I rebooted the first time, and I tried to go into Add/Remove programs to remove them, I cuold not get into that either, but I did find the weird stuff in the program files and deleted a few things that I knew what they were and that were not supposed to be on this computer (ie world of warcraft)
I have tried every single thing I can think of and I cannot get this problem fixed, any suggestions besides blowing it up, or brining it to a shop? I already have to replace one computer that will not turn on anymore....

I am having the same issue, with a DELL optiplex gx620. The computer can boot up to the log-in screen and then when I hit "ctrl alt del" to log in, the keyboard does not respond. I try num lock and other keys and get nothing. Windows was updated two days ago. The maching is never really dormant - except on weekends.

Has anyone found a fix for this that doesn't require re-installing windows?

My laptop has done the same thing. It's an Acer. Although it seems you cannot fix it, just try booting with safe mode every day for 3 weeks and that's what helped mine. :) Hoped it helped!

Borrow a CD of your computer's system, of have someone reformat it and to make a cd of the system to have in the future. If you have the athondication key code, you can have a cd made, and offer to pay for it, it should not cost you much.
That is so that you can reformat next time you get problems, as they charge a lot to do it professionaly, it it happens often as it does with me.

Most times, it is a hicap which you may need to reformat to get rid of.
It is hard to know what the problem is unless you have the computer in front of you and try a number of different things.
I hope you have fixed it by now.

On windows XP ... First make sure you know the drive where you installed your windows XP (for example c:) : I name it "Yourdrive".
If you have 2 operating systems installed, you can work from in the O.S. system that works well, if not try to work in save mode by pressing the f8 key at start-up.

When you're logged in:
Go to run ... type cmd ... enter ... type chkdsk "Yourdrive": /f /r

When you don't have 2 operating systems installed, wait till all is finished.
Whith one operating system installed, your computer will have to restart because it can not make the changes whithout having a restart.

Hope this will help you all.

Happy greetings

For those who cannot go in safe mode

To enter Recovery Console in Windows XP, you will need to boot from the Windows XP CD.

1. Watch for a Press any key to boot from CD... message similar to the one shown above.

2. Press a key to force the computer to boot from the Windows CD. If you do not press a key, your PC will continue to boot to the Windows XP installation that's currently installed on your hard drive. If this happens, simply reboot and try to boot to the Windows XP CD again.
How to Enter Windows XP Recovery Console

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/rconsole.htm

The Recovery Console can be an indispensable diagnostic tool when your Windows XP, 2000, or Server 2003 based computer suffers from certain major problems.

A number of commands are available within Recovery Console, some of them exclusive to the tool. When used, these commands can do things as simple as copying a file from one place to another or as complicated as repairing the master boot record after a major virus attack.

Chkdsk
The chkdsk command, often referred to as "check disk", is used to identify, and often times correct, certain hard drive errors.

I think that it is no use to fix it, i have the same problem and i am tired of it... so i think you just should blow it up
Jeff - Jun 17, 2010 10:32PM
Why not try to fix it? ... Just enter the "chkdsk "yourdrive": /f /r" command and you're problem will be solved (remember to replace "yourdrive" with C or E or ...)

I had the same problem....couldn't get past the start up screen....keyboard wouldn't work...couldn't get into safe mode, etc. etc.

Finally just took it in to be serviced since nothing I tried worked.

Assumed it was going to be a virus/mal ware/spy ware related....

As it turns out : A faulty RAM chip, only worked intermittently.

Maybe this will help someone else?

I would love to just reinstall windows, however I do not have the disk, I have the key, just not the disk.

I was told by my kids that the computer was not working well before the last time we used it in June. So I guess this is a long time problem (its the kids internet computer)

Any other suggestions?

Have you tried to go back to a boot that worked, if any of our friends have a disc run repaire windows, not the first screen that says reparie but the second time it comes up, it the same as re-installing but you do not loose any thing, if you have another pc with internet go online and download windows xp ? what ever version you have and then run the repare, if it's a PC tower you can slave the hard drive onto another pc and then get that pc to run scan disk to try and repare it, or take of all your data pictures and files then format it, and then re-install windows on it, if you have norton 2003 or above use you disc ghost and use that as a windows disc on the one that will not boot, and instal your virson of windows on the other one, (just make sure after you have run the ghost you take off any thing you do want the kids to see), this is a good site to get windows from utorrent, when you have installed it type in mininova in the search box and make sure it's on TORRENT not google to search, you will find all windows on this site, then unistall it as there are LEECHES with the program.

at FIrst u have to do "change the motherboard battery".
or remove the battery and after half an hour reinsert in the same locatiion.
this is the utlimate solution
Pdub - Dec 18, 2008 03:27PM
thanks, I'll give that a try. this has been driving me insane.
Pdub - Dec 22, 2008 06:14PM
still no solution. took battery out which reset clock / settings but did nothing to help my main issue......the keyboard works to enter setup f2,etc...but once windows starts loading all of the functions of the keyboard are deactivated so i cant enter safemode or anything for that matter (arrows to move to other options don't work). it goes right to the logon screen as normal but when i click on my icon it goes to the desktop for 1/2 a sec. and shoots right back to 'welcome' screen and 'saving settings'. I have disks to reformat but can't because it asks 'hit any button to start from cd' which i can't because my keyboard doesn't work past initial startup 'ram', hdd's, etc. would hate to have to reformat but would if it is my last resort. i've tried talking to microsoft and norton people....'this happened right after i did 'pc cleanup' with norton utilities....got me even more frustrated both we're a joke. it has to be in bios, or something, and i can't get it to run. anybody know what the actual name of this issue is so that i can research. i have built my own comps so hardware not a real issue for me but this is getting into either bios/config/software problem or i caught a virus. Help would be greatly appreciated.
deeter - Feb 13, 2009 05:56AM
Hola ,

I am wondering if you found a fix for your issue. My father called me last night with the same problem. Laptop loads to the splash screen but the mouse and keyboard do not appear to display or function properly. Its like the Keyboard and mouse pad do not exist. I did find you can use the keys to load the bios and choose option pre-windows..

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi. I would suggest you reinstall the operating system. :) I'm having that trouble also with a friends computer, as I can hit F10 and get the safe mode screen, but I can't get past that. The arrows on the keyboard won't work. If you don't have the OS on CD-ROM, I would suggest downloading it onto a flash drive, and trying it that way. :) Hope I helped, I'm majoring in CPT-IT and we are just starting to trouble shoot. :)

Jonezyy - Jun 19, 2009 06:58PM
So you think if we remove the watch battery looking one, leave the computer alone for half an hour then put it back in, the comp should work? Does it matter if you try and turn it on during that half hour? Thanks

Chances are its a simple mistake like the time and date is incorrect, i have had this problem on several other computers i have seen. Best thing to do is...

Boot into Safe Mode when the computer gets passed the Bios press F8
Boot into safe mode, the computer should boot up as normal asking which account you would like
to login to [USERS] or Admin
Login to the user as your normally would, check the date is correct if not adjust accordingly.

Restart the computer, and it should be working.
pdub - Jan 25, 2009 02:32PM
can't load into safe mode. keyboard disabled after initial startup. I can show the screen for booting in safemode f8 but can not move to option of safemode because my arrow keys don't work. like i explained in my first response.

I had a similar problem. My computer my power cord came undone whilst i was logged on and when I restarted the computer after 2 weeks holiday it did not load past the logon page. (mouse not moving and keyboard inactive)

I removed the motherboard battery for a few minutes and put it back in. This fixed the issue.

best of luck to you all

My fiance's computer got a virus. So I ran a sweep and it found some very harmful stuff. It kept popping up with svchost.exe error 0x7d4caa9b throughout the entire process. After trying to restart the computer I did get a start key in the bottom but it would not go to anything. Now it has gone pass the welcome screen and nothing. Just the background pic of the dog. No start screen no icons nothing. Any suggestions!
Weed - Apr 2, 2009 03:18PM
Jen,

If the virus check found a bunch of crap on there, then your best and most sure method of getting back to normal is to install the OS again - but try the repair install first. Not the Repair Utility, but the Repair installation. This leaves all the files on the drive intact and basically repairs the Windows installation.

Do a few more searches on your problems and symptoms first and then - if nothing helps, reinstall OS.

Good luck.

I am having the exact same problem as described above, with one additional problem. I have a windows XP disk and would like to re-install the OS, but BIOS doesn't recognize my CD-ROM drive. I suspect the drivers have been deleted from the virus, but since I can't log into windows past the welcome screen, I don't know how to check or re-enable my CD-ROM drive.

I've tried changing the boot order in BIOS so that the CD-ROM drive boots first, even unchecking the hard drive. The message displays that selected drive not recognized. Help.

this happened too me this morning after i put a digtial cam driver disc in, it installed and then asked me to restart pc, so i clicked the ok button to restart, and it didnt even get pass log in, it takes me to the option of load safe mode etc, which i can move arrows, however it dont load in any mode at all.

last time i had a funny problem like this was when windows did a auto update and screwed my system up a few months back it took 4 days to iron out no idea how it was fixed last time,(problem was video card update driver didnt like new windows update)i was able to get into safe mode, and try a FEW THINGS OUT BUT NOT THIS PROBLEM ATM.

on a side note i havnt used the desk top pc as much the last 3 weeks only been using the laptop in bed after long shift work.

ill try the battery tomorrow, only things i tired so far are which loading options to rom from hd and back to hd, no luck, even tired removing plugs to all hardware no luck,

i beleive in my case adding the driver for my cam screwed the pc up and removed some windows data, who knows.

My problem was caused by the anti-virus i was using finding a 'false positive' and moving the windows logon file into quarrantine. Without this file in the correct location it was unable to login after a reboot.

I remove the drive and plugged it into another pc as a slave HDD that was also running XP.

C:\windows\system32 folder should have a file called USERINIT. This is the file that had been quarrantined by the anti virus.

Copy if from the 'good' pc intoi the same location on your HDD and then put it the HDD back in your pc. Your problem should be fixed.

It will have had nothing to do with installing your camera software, except that it forced a reboot and this file was missing.

Good luck

GDUB,
What you described on Jul 26, 2009 at 9:14:20 pm BST is EXACTLY what happened with my computer. Except, when I connected my drive to another computer to transfer a replacement USERINIT.exe file, it was still in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder. I renamed it and copied a new one in, anyway. However, when I reinstalled the hard drive back to my "infected" computer, it still would still immediately log back off as soon as my desktop wallpaper showed up. Incidentally, I get the same response even in Safemode.
Are there other files that could be causing this same effect, that I should replace along with USERINIT.exe?
Thanks for the help.

after many many days, i thought stuff it ill reinstall windows over it(and thought i would lose all my stuff) after trying so many things that never worked, i found that in the end i installed windows XP to get it working again, plus i still have all my data and games and all the other jazz intact,

once windows finally booted up after i installed windows xp, i found a dos screen saying boot virsus, atm, im backing up a few things in case, i will look into the system 32 for the USERINIT. file, to see if its been rewriten,

recap of what was going on for me,
when i turn pc on it greeted me with safe mode and the other 3 modes, which i could select however it would NEVER boot them at all.then it would go to NO SIGNAL, which i thought my massive video card was fried, not the case.woot.

things i tired b4 the fianlly reinstall,
in dos load up boot from CD rom, boot from HD, tired this like 15 times lol.
tired recovery in ez flash, also tired recovery in windows disc. a few times.
i even unpluged hardware like video card, harddrive, dvd drives
slapped the computer and yelled at it some more.

so dont do a flesh install just reinstall over your current windows, to do this, first go to DOS, and select boot from CD rom dvd rom, save settings F10, place in windows XP disc, the next time to turn pc on or after u get failed login it shhould load from the ROM drive and u will get options, windows should start running on the bottom of the screen dont do any thing untill its run its course, takes under 3 mins, then u will get a new screen then just install windows, takes another 30 mins this part,

hope this helps u out , sorry about the grammer and spelling errors,
