HP PC, XP OS, Blue Screen with HP logo only

I had no choice but to shut down the computer. When I rebooted, the system opened to the Blue HP logo screen with Recovery, safe mode, setup options at the bottom of the screen but would go no futher - I could not get system recovery, safe mode or setup. I even tried to do a system recovery by putting in the recovery disc, but still noting.
I am hoping that this is a hardward problem and my data is recoverable.
Any suggestions on how to fix or recover my information would be greatly appreciated.
