My computer turns off automatically!Solved/Closed

Question

hey, my computer automatically turns off whenever I play any game for about few minutes!!!! I don't know why it keeps turning off. If i'm using the internet or any lighter softwares it stays on even for a day. I ain't sure with my fan but it seems ok.  Can you guys please tell me the possible problems????

Hi all, 

So many people with such a problem.

When playing games, your computer cpu is used much more..
Graphics cards are used much more..
They create more heat..
Some laptops and indeed computers can overheat..
There is a failsafe.
If a computer getsd over the pre-configured temperature, the computer restarts or shuts down.
This is to avoid your cpu being damaged.

You can check if this is happening to you by downloading "coreTemp":

If the temperature is 90 degrees during your gameplay or infact if it is around 75 degrees whilst just using your computer... This is probably the issue you are coming across.

Replace your Heat Sink and add more fans to your computer.. Probably best to take to a computer repair.. If you have no idea how to or look up on google how to. It is relatively simple, however sometimes you need to remove the whole motherboard to place the grip on heatsinks.

I have had the same problem before with computers turning off by themselves. The problem mights be that the heatsink has collected alot of dust already and it does not allow the air from the fan to pass freely unto the CPU. Many computers have a default setting in the BIOS that shuts off the computer automatically if the CPU reaches a certain temperature. The computer turns off to prevent the CPU from getting damaged. Try cleaning and removing any dust from the components, motherboard, heatsink, fans etc. It should help solve the problem.

About your problem, the first thing you should do is clean up your PC, general cleaning... and be sure you clean also the heat sink of your processor cause sometimes if you processor temp. will to go the maximum limit it will cause your CPU system to shot down..

then clean up also your, memory card.. erase the pin of it just use rubber eraser to clean it..

if your done cleaning, try to replace your power supply a higher wattage's value cause sometimes if the power of it cant give a exact voltage it can cause also to shot down your PC..

and if your done of the things I've said... reassembled it and then run it again...

but if you still encounter that problem, try to use another hard disk drive.. install a new software or OS..

Well basically if you get a thing saying computer will shut off in 30 seconds then its most likely a virus or the fact that your mother board or hard drive is crashed. Most of which this happens your either having a power problem or just you need to reload your computer with whatever software your using. for instance if you have windows xp and it does this then its either your hard drive your mother board or a system error which is very easy to fix if you just reload it with the windows xp disk. I hope this solved some of your problems

i ran across the same problem. it took me weeks to figure it out. it was due to a poor design the cool air intake was 2 inches away from another part of the computer allowing it to over heat it too me for ever to figure that out the air intake was clogged up to the point where it unfunctional so I cleaned it out the air intake and it stopped also I have a mother board in a different computer that came with default settings that caused it too turn off after so long to prevent over heating but I put like 4 fans on that computer and I figured it would never over heat some asus motherboards have thi built in system also check and see if the prossecors fan is functional  cause without it being functional the other fans are useless.

Whenever ur pc turns off during high usage it's the Power Supply unit.  Either it's damaged or just can't handle the pressure.  Sure that will fix it.

Ive got 2 gigz ram, 2 gigz cpu, and 150gig hd, and my computer did that for a long time, all I had to do was open the case, and take first a can of compressed air to losen the dust up some, and then took a vacuum with a plastic hose on the end, set them both or tile/concrete, so you dont get the static from the carpet, and then vacuum all the dust out that the compressed air blows lose, its best to remove the fan from the CPU, just remember when the power cord plugs into the motherboard. Also remove the RAM, and remove all dust built up around that.  But please be sure to RE-SEAT the RAM exactly as it is, and if it dont fit, TURN IT. They only go one way, and you will break the slots in which hold the RAM in... or even worse the RAM.

Hi there, I had the exact same problem with my laptop before, and I realized that its getting too hot when I play video games or use heavy software. 
you need to get a metal base that you can put your laptop on, it lets you adjust the angle so that the base of the laptop isn't near any surface, this way your laptop fan can ventilate well and it won't get too hot.
the reason it shuts off because there is a sensor inside the laptop that shuts it off automatically if it gets too hot.
because if it doesn't shut off it will get damaged.

Get a new power cable. You'll be fine. Your power cable is dis-functional and/or damaged and needs to be replaced.

 guys u have to do nothing just clean ur  fan(of processor) and the socket below the fan of the processor completely.IT is  because of the dust present in the fan and in that socket present below the fan  causing the heating of processor.

---Before performing any work inside your PC tower/case, make sure it is not only unplugged, but that you have switched it off (where applicable - some power supplies have a switch on the back) and you've pushed in the power button, watched the HDD light blink on and fade out, showing total discharge. Then you can proceed  w/the usual grounding yourself/touching metal on the case... and I prefer to wear nitrile gloves when handling electronics.

---Most of this is related to XP unless it is general knowledge. If the problem is with Vista/Windows7, I have no advice for the user... warnings given prior to purchase should have been heeded, when the user was considering the purchase of a Vista-based system.

---First off, to get this one out of the way, the most neglected part of a PC is the power supply or PSU. This needs to be removed, making note of where all* wires go, the cover removed and all dust gently vacuumed out and then blown out from inside. After reinstalling the PSU and hooking everything up, power the system up and make sure all fans are running on the PSU. If a fan has stopped, the system very well could be going into a thermal protection mode and shutting down to prevent damage and/or fire. Clean that out at least once a year or 6 mos. Shop-Vac makes a nice little mini-vacuum attachment kit. Just be gentle and observant.

---Before going on any further, try and reenact the problem, but catch the old "Blue Screen Of Death" address to the fault by first, when booting, tapping the key that brings you to the Safe Mode screen (usually F8, F12 or F2 - in order of known popularity). When you have the safe mode screen, you will see a choice that states "Disable shut down on errors" or similar. Your next attempt should halt the system, giving you an address to where your error is occurring. Go to https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl and put in the first set of characters from the address that will resemble this: 0x0000ABC0 (0x0000ABC1, 0x0000ABC2, 0x0000ABC3, 0x0000ABC4). Look for a Microsoft site or a well-trusted PC info site and read what the problem could be. You can take it to the next step also by searching for each of the other areas of the string (E.G., 0x0000ABC1, 0x0000ABC2, etc.) and maybe learn some more.

---Also in XP, you have even viewer, which shows nearly all errors the system has. That is accessed by typing eventvwr in the Run dialog box ( START >|> RUN ). Red Xs are bad. Right click on error, select properties (or double-left click on error), highlight the description and then back to Search Google for results.

---Now, for those who have a PC shutting off mainly or only when playing high-end games or programs demanding extreme graphics, the problem could be that your graphics settings are too high. Could also be that the card doesn't have adequate cooling... or the card is in the wrong slot. Often times when the graphics card is a PCI-E or PCI-X, it needs to be in the correct slot, either the first PCI slot or the more advanced one (usually a different color).

---My first suggestion would be to make certain ALL fans are running like they should be. Any fan dragging or stopped can cause a system to power down to protect itself from damage/fire.

---Next would be cleaning the PC and components with antistatic rags, canned air and vacuum cleaner with gentle brush. 

---Sometime just removing the components (E.G., memory modules, graphics card, sound card, etc.) and reseating them in their slots will do the trick. Remember that heat causes materials to expand and cold causes them to constrict. The constant heating & cooling can cause materials to become warn, tarnished an/or dirty. Clean the contacts of a component with a soft pencil eraser and maybe even a alcohol wipe (not saturated) and canned air afterward.

---Test the power supply or try another (adequate wattage) known, good power supply. It could simply be that the PSU is bad. Wouldn't be the first time a 3m old PSU failed, they are often inadequate (underpowered) for the system... hence, one reason why you got such a good deal on it. If your PC says 3D graphics, AMD, Core Duo or has more than 4 total drives (E.G., CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, C: & D:) or 5 fans and the PSU says 450W or under, it's inadequate. Look for a efficient PSU anyway. Now days finding a 550W+ PSU for $50 that is 80% efficient is not such a hard task. Check reviews on not only the part number, but the company.

Hi I had the problem were my pc restarted then stuck at the pre bios screen and the likes, all you need to do is take the side off your pc and you will ee a little flat round battery about the size of a 10p piece, near that is a plastic block you will notice how it is pushed over 2 pins but there is 3 pins in total and still 1 pin on show not connected to anything, simply move the connector accross 1 pin then press ON nothing will happen but what you have just done is reset your bios then you need to unplug your PC and put the jumper block back in its original place then restart your pc, all should be fine now however if you have a graphics card linked to the monitor you will need to change the lead accross to your onboard vga connection to be able to see the screen as it will go back to default settings when the bios are reset from here just reconfigure your bios to use your pci graphics card etc hope this helps.

Hello, you might be experiencing this problem because your parents/gardiens have set an automatic shutdown time that could be one problem

also there is a thing called *over charge* this occurs when you have been charging your computer for just to long to fix this problem look at instructions bellow
1.take battery out of your computer charger out of computer (if you have it in)
2.take charger out of computer (if you have it in)
3.hold down your computer power button for 60 seconds
4.put battery back in

now try it should work (if it was acctually that problem)
if not then ask your parents if they have any kind of computer parental controll software on your computer.

I think your processor may get heat quickley.nor there will be some batch files in your pc that commands you computer within a certain time ...first check wheather this is caused by batch files ..two or three times check the time when your system getting down.if all the shutting down time are equal you computer has bad batch files......if not try to change your processor fan if it didnt help change the processor.................

I have a similar problem, my notebook is a hp pavilion dv3500, from 2009, and when I play games like CoD 4 and 6, L4D2, CS:S and Garrys Mod 11, my pc turns off after 5-10 minutes of gameplay.

there may be several reasons why a computer may shutoff abruptly.

1) you did not mention if you get any errors before shut down.

these are the possibilities if you are not getting the errors:

a) ram problems
b)computer overheat
c)power problems

the most common one ,batteries..try to run(if its a laptop) with the batteries removed and see what happens. it usually works.. batteries are usually good only for a certain period of time.
