LAPTOP SCREEN BLANK EXCEPT "LOCK" ICON

Hello,
old ibm thinkpad - turned on yesterday and all i got was blank screen except for 2 icons in the upper left corner - a screen and a padlock. no curser and a "beep" when i touch any key.
kids recently tried changing id and passwords. battery dead - running on a/c.
any ideas?
