System slow/ no desktop icons/ lots of popups

Hi friends,
I really need help. From past 3 days I am trying to find solutions on net and try fixing but no use. So thought of applying here.. I have Symantec antivirus but does not scan for any virus. So downloaded windows defender.
1) When I start my system(XP) there are no desktop icons (only wallpaper exists). But CTRL+ALT+DEL works.. so logged off and logged on and desktop icons appear.. Also some times on system booting desktop icons appear on first time only..
2) Google search(only front page appears)/hotmail/ etc dont work. but gmail/rediff and many sites work.. Also after few navigations in gmail it stops working..
3) I get tons(approx 100) of new windows opened automatically when opening a site..

Symantec/Windows defender didnot find any virus.

Pls suggest me what virus is it and what steps should I take to get rid of them..

Hi all.. After lots of runs with AVG/Trendmicro/Symantec/windows defender etc nothing helped.
I successfully managed to delete the virus using spybot search and destroy.. My system is good. Thats a great tool.. just run it.
