HDMI doesnt work

Hello,
a few months ago i hooked my laptop up to my HD tv and i was playing movies from the DVD player on my laptop. i also got files from friends of movies i didnt have. it worked just fine for a while but now when i plug in the HDMI cable it only shows the desktop of my laptop instead of the windows media player screen as i once did. how do i get it to go back to showing other things other than the desktop?
