How to connect monitor

Hello,
I am trying to connect my Dell monitor with my latitude D505, but I just got connected like external monitory,
I want to connect my monitor as primary monitor because i have stolen my original screen. when I go on display settings and click on use 2nd monitor as primary then my dell monitor is not working and seems black blank screen...
Can you please help me what I should do for this hardware problem. I am using windows xp in my system..
kindly reply me as soon as possible...

Dear Sir,

Your post for your problem is quite confusing; you want to set your monitor as the primary monitor but you are setting the primary settings to the second monitor.

You should be setting the first one as primary.

Please give clearer explanation for your problem.
