Show Desktop button missing

Jamescracker, on Monday 10 March 2008 à 10:59:15
Hello,
I can't figure out how to put the "show desktop" button on my tool bar.
Microsoft page: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Wi...
recommended the following, but IT DIDN'T WORK.

If you can't see the Show Desktop icon, try displaying more of the Quick Launch toolbar by clicking the double chevron icon Picture of double chevrons on the Quick Launch toolbar. If that doesn't work, you might need to add the Quick Launch toolbar by right-clicking an empty area on the taskbar, pointing to Toolbars, and then clicking Quick Launch so that it has a check mark next to it.

Please help me put a show desktop button on my toolbar.
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Yes. In application data u have the "show desktop" path......... but now it depends if u've deleted it or simply the shortcut... If its the shortcut ur lucky koz i dont kno wat to do if u deleted the original file.

Hello James,

First, open Notepad and then enter in the text below exactly as shown.

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

then save as show desktop.scf, save type is all fles....on your desktop

it will be done.......

If you want to put the icon back in the Quick Launch toolbar, cut the icon and paste it (don’t drag and drop it because that will only create a shortcut) into this path:

If you use XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

If you use Vista: C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

thanks

Thanks very much Eswar.
Creating the sfc-file with Notepad, was the part I missed to get the Icon to function again.
Thanks very much, you have helped me a lot!

My laptop only shows the screensaver. No start buttons, etc. along the bottom of the screen. Is there anything I can do? When I clik "Control+alt+delete" it takes me to Windows Task Manager mini screen. That's all. I can find programs through this and work on them. But can't get access to the internet, check email, or show the normal screen.

Anything you could do will help!

AppData is a hidden folder make sure you turn on the show hidden folders function by going to the folder options. You can access this by going to any folder and pressing the alt function and then picking tools. There you choose folder options and then go to view. You should see something that says Hidden Files and Folders. Then click on the show hidden files and folders options. This was written a while ago so i don't know if you still need help.

Hi eswar.
Thank you for getting in touch. OS is XP Home with IE6. IE shortcut is still on Desktop and I can access the web as per usual, but without the quick launch button in the task bar it is a pain to open another browser window. Hope you can help.

Hello Grannie....

Sorry for the delay..........

Solution:

1. Create a shortcut of IE from "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" on to your desktop

2. please change the start in path as %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH% on the shortcut that was created on your dektop....

last step: cut the shortcut of IE that was created on your desktop and paste into D:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch....

** Please select show hidden files and files (enable) on folder options...........coz the application data folder is a hidden item...

do ask me if you have any questions....

Hi Eswar,
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you...

I have managed to get the shortcut to iexplorer.exe on my desktop; as per your instructions. The next instruction has me flummoxed. Please can you give me the idiots version i.e. next click on this etc. Where do I go to find the start in path?

Thank you for being so patient...it must be hard for someone so computer literate to have to deal with people like me.

Grateful Grannie

It's ok NP....

please find below the answers for your Q?

Select the Icon (Shortcut to iexplorere.exe) on your dektop....and then right click, go to properties

you will get the properties of IE

Select Shotcut tab...next to genreal tab....

go to start in test box...delete the text there if you find other than the below

%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

Shoot me if you have any questions

mail me to a.munieswar@gmail.com.......

Another quick way is to use the Regsvr32 command. Go to Start> Run and type in “regsvr32 /n /i:U shell32.dll“. This should restore the desktop icon. You will get a message “DllInstall in Shell32.dll succeededâ€

yeah good alternative to get back the "show desktop" icon.
but even if one performs a shift delete operation, he can get it back by browsing through the same location under administrator user and the icon can be found.

I did what you posted, however theres a problem with my .scf extension cause I accidently overwrote it cause I didn't know windows had a .scf extension already. Anyway, if i go to "Folder Options" and create a new .scf extension, which program do I choose to run this desktop.scf file? Currently, .scf files do not have any Actions, I think thats why the desktop isn't being shown.

Thanks in Advanced!
