Hello, I'm new at here. I have this problem. I can't open my C and D drives by double clicking on them, instead the drive are beeing opened in my XnView program. But I still can open the drive by right clicking and choosing open. I tried removing the XnView folder from Program Files folder, but when I double clicked on my drive it automatically started Open With box! I've searched the web trying to find the solution I've tried many things one of theme were Disk Heal program I've downloaded it, installed it, run it and red the instruction, the first three lines sad:
"1)Fixes Disk Problems:

Fixes the "Open With" Dialog or "Could not find 'something'" error
which occurs when a drive is opened."
But when I tried to fix it nothing worked. Maybe I did something wrong with the program, maybe it wasn't programs fault after all.
On the web I found two possible reasons: 1 Anti-Virus program deleted autorun file with the virus.
2 It happened because of drives icon change @ Control Panel>Appearance and Theme>Folder Options>File Types.
Now I know it was the second one because I tried to change the drives icon(it didn't work, but in the file type wen I pressed the advance button it showed me that the icon is changed.). I changed the icon beck but still nothing. I'm telling you all this too give you as many information as possible.Ask me if you need more information! Sorry if I've confused somebody.
So that's my problem! Please HELP ME if you can! I'll be VERY grateful for any HELP! Sorry for English, I tried!

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.1

Windows XP

I have the same problem but with 6 drives including the A: drive when a floppy is in. I have tried several things to remove the autorun.inf from these drives. I have been successful, initially, except for one drive that gives an access denied error message.

I have tried rebooting to ensure nothiing was running on it, it is an accessory drive, to no avail. I started in safe and did the attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf and the del part to all drives but am still access denied on the same drive even in safe mode.

I know its a virus and McAfee found them but won't remove, only quarantine. I restarted as a couple said they would be dealt with on restart and still they were there. Since shutting off my restore option I have no restore points to go to but I couldn't anyway, tried before coming to these solutions.

I get regular hits on my A: drive for access, autorun, as I am sure I am on the rest of my drives.

Please help!!!!

IF U R NOT ABLE TO OPEN C: D: DRIVE(APPEAR OPEN WITH WINDOWS)

I have so many method 4 u

Choose the program you want to use to open this file with:

In this case, the â??Always use the selected program to open this kind of fileâ?? option is grayed out.

The symptom occurs because when autorun.vbs is created by trojan horse or virus. The virus normally loads autorun.inf file to root folder of all hard drive or USB drive, and then execute autorun.bat file which contains script to apply and merge autorun.reg into the registry, with possible change to the following registry key to ensure that virus is loaded when system starts:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Userinit=userinit.exe,autorun.exe

Finally, autorun.bat will call wscript.exe to run autorun.vbs.

When antivirus or security software detected the autorun.vbs file as infected, the file will be deleted or removed or quarantined. However, other files (autorun.*ï¼? and registry value still referring to autorun.vbs, and this document no longer exists, hence the error when users double click to open a drive folder.

To correct and solve this error, follow this steps:

Run Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del or right click on Taskbar)
Stop wscript.exe process if available by highlighting the process name and clicking End Process.
Then terminate explorer.exe process.
In Task Manager, click on File -> New Task (Runâ?¦).
Type â??cmdâ?? (without quotes) into the Open text box and click OK.
Type the following command one by one followed by hitting Enter key:
del c:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
del d:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
del e:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a

c, d, e each represents drive letters on Windows system. If there are more drives or partitions available, continue to command by altering to other drive letter. Note that you must also clean the autorun files from USB flash drive or portable hard disk as the external drive may also be infected.

In Task Manager, click on File -> New Task (Runâ?¦).
Type â??regeditâ?? (without quotes) into the Open text box and click OK.
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Check if the value name and value data for the key is correct (the value data of userint.exe include the path which may be different than C drive, which is also valid, note also the comma which is also needed):
â??Userinitâ??=â??C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,â??

If the value is incorrent, modify it to the valid value data.

and other
try disk heal software

one more solution:

first go to run then write " regedit" that is registry

then find " ctrl+f"

in this box write "mountpoints2" and delete it ......

then again press "ctrl+f" again find mountpoints2 until all these files are not deleted

then u will see ur problems is solved................

AND

1Open Start >> Run and type regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
2. press ok
3. You will see a message DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in shell32.dll succeeded
4. thats it

try this 4 step may this slove ur prob

BUT IF U R NOT TECHNICAL

THN PLZ TRY DISK HEAL SOFTWARE ONLY ITS WORK 85%

Try Mhanmet Bhatia's first method, just insted of :
del c:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
del d:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
del e:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
write:
del d:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
del e:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
del f:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
But do ALL of what Mhanment wrote, not just the part above!!!
Also u can try
d:\> attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf
d:\> del autorun.inf
e:\> attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf
e:\> del autorun.inf
f:\> attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf
f:\> del autorun.inf
(Ravi's suggestion) Don't worry you don't have to search. It's all of it.
It should work. If it doesn't work please keep in touch.^_^

OK. I understand you're problem. Maybe the problem is because you're not an admin of the PC you're using? If not, that means that something else is blocking you away from editing those files...maybe be an anti-virus program of some sort. Try 2 figure it out.

Wonderful! This worked for me. By the way, I got the "cannot find autorun.inf" message as well. What I did was move up to my root.

For example, I was at

C:\Documents and Settings\Dave:

I moved up by using:

C:\Documents and Settings\Dave: CD..

and then:

C:\Documents and Settings: CD..

That put me at:

C:\

Then I was able to use the original commands with -r -s -h along with the deletes.

Reboot fixed the problem.

FYI, the original problem was caused by the NAR.VBS virus and XP Protection Center.

Thanks again,
Dave
