Actually, the kernel is not only a software used under Linux. The kernel is a small software present in all Operating Systems. Its most important purpose is to build an abstract bridge between software and hardware. It is designed to manage the communications with peripherals, to manage the memory, the processes, the filesystems, the network protocols etc...
And the device drivers are usually part of the kernel space. Linux is the kernel part of the Gnu/Linux operating system, you can find its process image on /boot/vmlinuz-x.x.x (replace x.x.x by your kernel version, see the "uname -r" command result). Under windows you can find it as a file in c:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe (it can vary, depending on your windows version and your partitions order). ...et euh..ouais nan bah c'est tout... |
