A+ Exam Question

Nathans02, on Sunday 20 July 2008 à 13:42:25
Hello,

I just bought the book "A+, Network+, Security+ Exams" published by O'Reilly. I have found several grammatical and factual errors in it so I have a hard time believing everything it states.
Here is a question (And answer) form the practice test section that has me stumped:
Q:Which of the following network topologies does not allow you to add or remove computers without affecting the network?
A. Ring
B. Bus
C. Mesh
D. Star
A: The entire network is affected when you add or remove computers in a bus network.

Shouldn't the answer be "Ring?" If a device is removed from a ring, all communication is interrupted. With a bus, the backbone (bus) would have to fail to disrupt the whole network.
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hello

Wanderer's correct.
A Bus (linnear) topology isn't used much in industry anymore. Back when I was in my first diploma computer course we had a bus network using thinnet (coaxial) cable and BNC connectors. If you lost one station for any reason, the entire segment went down. It happened frequently and was VERY annoying to say the least.
I've only worked with TR once and it's as wanderer said, you use a concentrator (very much like a hub or switch) which allows you to remove one, or more, devices without affecting the others.
