How to connect two system via ethernet

Hello everybody . please help me out this problem . i have my computer with windows sp2 and my laptop with vista home basic . i have a bsnl connection . with that i got a ethernet/router cable .i connected one end to my computer's rj 45 jack and other to my laptop 's rj 45 jack . nothing happened . how can i connect both of them ? any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hello, well if am right, the cable you are using may be a straight Ethernet cable, it is the mostly used, for such connection you need a cross cable, to know if the cable is straight or cross just look at the 2 RJ45 connectors, if the wiring colors are in the same order they are straight. also you need to set you connection to manual and input the ip manually, use ip like 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 to differenciate the 2 pc

Thanks dude for your advice but i still have some queries . the ethernet is cat 5e 4pairs patch cable (written on it). will you please tell me the step by step process of configuring or setting up the windows installation for file sharing . i have xp sp2 on my pc and vista home basic (registered ) on my laptop.
