Burning smell, completely dead

Hello,




Alright well for the past 2-3 days I had been experiencing a faint burning smell, i should of took it a little more seriously but thinking it was just dust or warming up, i left it. About an hour ago the computer suddenly died, the smell became real strong. I have a strong suspicion it's the PSU, getting up and close to the tower reveals the smell was indeed coming from the PSU.
My question is could other components be fried? The computer is only a few months old, i had it custom built. I suspect the PSU can’t handle the load.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello


IF you had your system built by a reputable shop, it should still be under warranty. If a friend built it for you, you may be out of luck. It's not uncommon that a PSU will fry other hardware when it blows. Before taking it to the shop, I suggest you open the case & get the info off the PSU label (brand name, overall wattage & rated amperages on the +3.3v, +5v & +12v rails), then post it. One of us will be able to tell you if the PSU is/was a cheapie. As for the rest of your components, you won't know until you get them tested.

hi cracker,this is a dangerous stuff,imagine u were not there and it lit up???????pffff,,so it is under warrntly????if yes go back to them and scold them as you say it is a new one so how this happened,,,,
