The sound on my hp laptop doesnt work

Heya,

my laptop hp is really great and i have had it for i think about a year or 2, up till now its been working fine apart from the odd writing problem. but lately i realised my sound has completely stopped working, its not muted or low it has just stopped. i went on control panel sound but nuthing seems to be the problem, its like my comp hasnt realized the sound isnt working. i have searched everywhere, and googled all sorts of things to try and fix it but got nothing. but then i found this site and i am hoping to get the answer because i really need this sound.
details:

it doesnt work with headphones
it doesnt work on youtube, dvds or cds
it doesnt work with the sounds on msn
it has entirely stopped.
on the sound icon it shows the sound is there, when i am trying to play music, but nothing is coming out.
i cant hear anything (and no im not deaf)

What is the model of your laptop?

one good thing to know about the sound system of laptop, it is generally divided in 2 part, 1 is the software control, the volume/mute you use from windows, and the hardware controls, theses are generally the physical button on the laptop that control sound, these two are sometimes independent, when you press the volume button on the laptop do you see the volume indicator on the screen? check that this is not low or set to mute

if you dont see the indicator, its is possible that you are missing the hotkey driver for your laptop

You go to the start up menu and on the search box you click sound after that you get 3 choses you click the chose of Speaker and Dual headphones.
