cannot access volume control

The volume control icon just disappeared from the tool bar...and every attempt to reaccess the control has ended in failure.

I've gone to the Microsoft site and followed instructions on some of their FAQ's...but no luck. And...of all bad luck...it disappeared while at no volume!!! One simply cannot play poker without sounds.

Anyone got any suggestions.

(I still haven't convinced Nancy that we should buy a new computer as Timber suggested after my last problem.)

Wow.. its such a complex problem that u have here... I hope u tried checking devices from device manager, checked the settings from control panel.. remove ur sound card etc......... to detect such problems u need to make tests on ur machine.... and if it persists after all the possible test, i refer u to reformat...
