hi emartin1,
there is no need of transfering ,,try to repair your syatem registry ,using installation cd,,,,,
while installing windows we will get a options ,,repair existing windows(try to repair it),other wise,,u can choose new installation in same previous installed drive,,u wont loss any data, just all softwares that are previously installed will be lossed,,

Thank you Ckiran04,

For some reason my windowsxp does not give me the option to repair when reinstalling WindowsXP; so before I installe a fresh copy I want to copy some files from C:\ to an USB external device I have connected but DOS seems that does not recognize the external device. Any suggestion?

So I copied that file to that hard drive that woudn't boot up and it shows it is there but, the windows xp pro sp II on that hard drive still won't allow the computer to boot up.

Is there a list of what files are needed to boot up somewhere so that I can check them off one by one to verfiy they are all there ?

Dennis

I have the same problem, however after trying to boot to the Windows XP disc, I can NOT get the Recovery Console to start. It just says that the windows/system32/config/system file is corrupt. Then if I try to run REPAIR for the disc, it givee the Blue Screen of Death and sayd Windwos has stopped to protect my computer. I am also at the reformat point, but I would like to think there is something else I'm missing or haven't tried.
Thank you

Okay, this is how I repaired my Win XP without losing any data at all.

So first you are going to need a FULL INSTALLATION COPY of XP, some of the backups are full copies but some are not so keep that in mind.

So just load that up. The repair option for XP is NOT where most people probably think it is. Do NOT enter the recovery console, it will do absolutely nothing to help, instead press ENTER. Agree to terms by pressing F8 and hopefully it will say an existing installation of XP has been found. Make sure you have selected it and press R. The rest is automatic, it will repair and replace any system32 files that have been modified or not found. Hopefully next time you boot windows, it will be working good as new with all your programs and files still intact :)

Unfortunately, this is not always the case and a full re-installation me be necessary :(

Hope I helped
