How does one recognize if a USB cable is 1.0 or 2.0? Or are they identical?

Thanks,
J-C R.

Configuration: Mac OS X
Firefox 2.0.0.14

To Jenifer:

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

USB 1.0, USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 CABLES are virtually identical in every way except possibly quality.

You can use any USB cable with any USB version device and they will work at the speeds of the connected devices. So a USB cable that came with your USB 1.0 device will connect two USB 2.0 devices at USB 2.0 speeds perfectly unless the cable is badly made.

USB 2.0 cables being sold at more expensive prices are all a complete rip off and totally unnecesary.

The only difference between the cable is that usb2 cable always comes shielded, and for usb1 it was optional.
a usb2 device can use a usb1 cable and damn all difference.
if you plug a usb2 device into a usb1 PORT, then you will notice a difference, the usb2 device will transfer at usb1 speeds.
if you plug a usb1 device into a usb1 PORT, the device will still run at same speed.
again, the whole idea of a usb2 cable is that the inner cables are shielded from external interferance, and you would need a fair bit of electrical intereferance for it to affect the transfer speeds noticably.

Not true. There are cables out there that will only run at USB 1.0 speeds. I hadn't known this until I actually encountered one. I got confirmation for it but unfortunately I don't have a supporting link off hand.

When you plug you USB cable in check your USB ports in the device manager And check the Universal Serial Bus Controller, usually the last drop list, and make sure your device is on the USB2 Enhanced Host Controller. Most usb Ports are all compatible but it depends how many USB 2.0 devices your PC your PC can run at once< usally one or two. If none you can by an eternal 2.0 converter w/ external power if more are needed
