So im installing a brand new Maxtor Sata drive into my dell dimension 4200, it has currently an IDE 40gb, the new sata drive has power and in my bios screen its recgonized however it is not recognized when i actually load into windows. under my computer or under device manager in neither place is the hard drive recognized. i tried messing with the settings in the bios to auto detect the sata drive but then it tries to boot from it, instead of the ide drive.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.5.1

If you received a utility CD with the hard drive, you can use it to format the drive. After you format it and restart the PC you should see it explorer.

Good Luck
