If your solution is "checking the the box that says -> Show hidden files and folders", then i must say you are correct. But there is this particular bug where by even though you've chosen to display hidden files, hidden files and folders still wont show.

Please can any one help to remedy this issue

There are one virus which hide your folders which is called super hidden files. first check your disk properties by right click. if it show some memory usage. but files are on same folder. go to the site http://www.petges.lu/download/download.html download attribute changer install on your pc. then go to your folder right click ,atrribute change to archives.... you may able to see all hidden files

If you cannot find that do a search (Cntrl + F) and put "SHOWALL" text. I am sure you will find it this time.

I am currently at a friends house, he asked me to sort out this problem for him. In tools, folder options, on the view tab. Hidden folders shows, but the options to show or hide hidden files are no longer there. he had found and got rid of a virus this morning, and believes it must have been responsible. Searched everywhere, but couldn't solve it. Could create a hidden file and hide it, but couldn't view it again.
in desperation I did a system restore, and the problem was solved, the options to show or hide hidden files are back.

First make sure your computer is virus free, update your anti virus and scan for virus then follow this link, i'm sure this will help you, You can also download registry patch there, if in future this happens again then just run registry patch and it will solve the problem
