I lost lots of files after installing XP2

Hello everyone ..

i hope someone out there is able to assist me cos I am really desperate. I reinstalled XP2 and the installation was completed but it seems that I've lost most of my files. Everything looks like a blank canvas. My desktop, icons, folders, internet connection are no longer there and all the browsers are missing. My gut feeling tells me that i have done something very stupid without even knowing it. perhaps the installation has completely changed my configuration.

Is there anyway for me to retrieve those files or get my computer back to the way it was?

Your help is greatly appreciated.
