USB device detected as audio device

ninjakirby2, on Monday June 30, 2008 11:08:33 AM
Hello,

I have a 1GB USB flash mp3 player. When I connect it to my PC, it is detected as audio device rather than getting mapped as a drive. However the same device works properly when I connect it to my friend's PC having WinXP. There, it gets mapped as a removable drive. I tried to install the drive CD which came up with the device. But still it doesn't work on my installation of XP. Other USB devices work just fine on my machine.
Any resolution for this?
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hello

The only thing I can think of is to use the Sysprep utility to "reseal" your operating system. The reseal method is intended for people who wish to deploy a preconfigured installation of Windows XP on multiple computers with different hardware. BUT people often use it to delete the hardware SIDs from the registry. This causes Windows to reinstall all devices from scratch when it's rebooted after the OS is "resealed." In doing so, the hardware SIDs are regenerated. Using this procedure may cause a problem such as yours to be fixed. I can't promise anything, but it's worth a try. Backup your important documents to be on the safe side. Have your Windows XP Product Key handy as well. If you don't know it, you can get it by downloading Magical Jellybean Keyfinder. Then go here to download the SP2 Deployment Tools:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...

Unzip to a folder of your choice and then launch Sysprep.exe. Ignore the message box you get at the beginning. Just click OK to proceed.

In the Window that appears, place a check beside "Don't reset grace period for activation." Select "Restart" in the combobox beside "Shutdown Mode." Next click Reseal. Again, ignore the message box that appears and just click OK. Let it do its thing. When it's done, your computer will restart. It will take a few minutes longer to boot back into Windows because Windows is regenerating your hardware SIDs and reinstalling your hardware. It may be a good idea to have your MP3 player plugged in and turned on during this stage.
