MP3 folders not viewable via Windows Explorer

fllbass, on Saturday 28 June 2008 à 15:44:19
Greetings Everyone,

Started ripping my entire CD collection via Windows Media Player to an SimpleTech 500 GB External Hard Drive. Everything was fine and all folders of every CD that was ripped were visible on the folder (close to 45 GB).

Suddenly, artists from A to G were only appearing on the hard drive, and the hard drive properties were only reporting 9.5 GB of files. Like if all ripped CD/Folders from H to Z suddenly disappeared from the directory.

However, Windows Media Player still displays all burned CD's from A to Z, and when I right click and select properties on one of the songs of any of the H to Z "missing" music folders, they appear with the correct path to the external hard drive. They play with no issues whatsoever. So, I'm thinking that they have to be on the external hard drive. They just don't appear when you do a folder search.

Any reason why the H to Z "missing" folders are not appearing on the hard drive? Is this normal? Should I finish my project or will I have to start all over again? (1,200+ CD's).

Specs:
OS: Windows XP SP2
Ripping Software: Windows Media Player Ver. 11.0.5721.5145
Hardware: IBM Thinkpad T60 / Centrino Duo + SimpleTech Pininfarina 500GB External Drive.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed or advice you can provide in moving forward with this project without loosing all the work and time invested in it.

Cheers,

Fllbass
Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 2.0.0.14

Wow, very ironic I found this but I am having the same problem. I noticed this last night, came home and went to play an album but only folders from A-H was appearing, the rest has just disappeared. Its not removed from the harddrive, cause if I type the full address in windows explorder - '\Desktop\Useful Things\Music\The End - Elementary' for example, it goes to the folder, its just not appearing in the root.

Just now i was messing with it, clicking around with the arrange icons options and i put them into groups and refreshed. A few more had came up, all the way to N but was gone soon as the folder closed.
Ive had music in the same folder for about two years, its an internal harddrive - Maxxtor 80gb, amd 3000+ processor and windows xp sp2. There is about 30gb of files, but not even half are showing.

If anyone has found a solution to this that would be wonderful as this is quite frustrating. Thanks, Mike.

Greetings everyone again,

Someone told me that all folders will appear when running a 64-bit OS. 32-bit has limitations in the number of folders that can be viewed.

Can anyone validate this?

Thanks!

Well, Ive successfully fixed my problem with this. Im not sure exactly what did it but I think it was a combination of the following. I removed, and backed up about 5-6gb of the folders that I could see. I then set chkdsk to run at startup, and that took a good while to get through but it repaired a TON of bad clusters. All is well now though, and I just got all my music back so its a pretty good feelin haha. best of luck.

saw your posting regarding the lack of acessing the folders and files on an MP3 player. Im not the best computer guy - just enough to be dangerous.
I can write my entire windows media player to my MP3 and all synchs just fine. Again just like others I can only access about half of the folders even though they synch'd.
When I go and look at a folder thats not playing or acessed it will show a single song fron another artist that does play.
Could you e mail me what I can do to fix ? I saw your answer as running scan disk. Any help would be appriciated
