Power supply or MoBo problem?

ronss1, on Saturday June 28, 2008 12:53:23 PM
Hello,

I just got home and attempted to turn my pc on. Unfortunatly, it is not working. When I press the power button, the power light comes on, then shuts off. If I hold the power button in, it fluctuates on off on off very quickly. The computer fails to power on BEFORE P.O.S.T begins. So, there is no beep to indicate the hardware failure. Also, when I plug in the power cable to the back of the computer, I notice the power light on the power supply is on. Another thing I noticed, that may not be related, the fan makes a wierd noise, as it were starting to go out. I highly doubt this is the root cause, because the fan is not a requirement to boot the pc, and because the computer isnt overheated, it has been off for several days.

I am pretty sure it is either the mobo or the power supply. Any ideas on which it may be, or maybe something else entirely. I need to get it up and running asap. I tried gateway support but I do not believe there tech support is worth $50 for every 15 minutes.

Please help me, any advice is greatly appreciated!
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

1. check if there is a wire from the power supply hindering the fan from spinning well.
2. check if the memory modules are in place and properly fixed.
3. you may need to dust off your pc fan.
4. check if keyboard and mouse are connected properly.

Hello

"I highly doubt this is the root cause, because the fan is not a requirement to boot the pc"

On some systems it is. If a fan isn't detected or the RPM's are too low, the system will shutdown to prevent the CPU from frying. I'm not saying that's the problem, but don't rule it out as a possibility. If there's something wrong with the fan, fix it.
