Hello,

My HP laptop has recently stopped recognising all memory sticks and my external hard drive (they used to work!). When plugged in the computer makes a "blump" noise to show a device has been connected but the devices do not appear in my computer and are non accessible. My brother has exactly the same laptop as me (but with vista) and both the memory sticks and external hard drive work fine. Please advise!

Thanks

Rikki

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.11

Dear Sir,

This is because your USB ports has been disabled! to enable just follow these steps,

To re-enable a disabled port:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate, and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor
4. In the right pane, double-click Start.
5. In the Value data box, type 3, click Hexadecimal (if it is not already selected), and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.

3 was already present in the value box - and the problem is still occuring. The USB ports work with my modem/mouse so I dont think they have been disabled. Both the memory sticks and and the external hard drive appear as USB mass storage devices in the device manager and are reported as working correctly but there is no way to access them. Thanks

Hi,
Unfortunatly I don't have any answers but I am in an almost identical situation - no external storage is working, but the same items will work on my other computer which also runs XP SP3. I have firefox 3.0.14 but that probably makes no difference. Just thought I'd let you know someone else was in the same boat
