Hello,
one day when my ipod ran out of battery and i connected it to my computer but it didn't show up and it still charged so i connected it to my macbook and it showed up. The next day i spent $50 worth of songs on my computer but my ipod doesn't connect so i can't add them on and i'm afraid that if i uninstall itunes then that money will go to waste what can i do??

hi,

update the version of iTunes that you are using then connect the iPod.

this should fix the problem.

Bunny lover - Jul 9, 2009 11:15PM
i tried that and it still didn't work
drum4life1113 - Sep 18, 2009 02:53PM
It doesnt matter if you uninstall itunes because the songs are saved to your account and not just your itunes. so when you install itunes again the songs you already purchased will still be there
dadaaadum - Mar 28, 2010 03:42PM
that worked for me! but really, if you are going to get a music device, DO NOT BUY AN IPOD this is the third time it broke on me this month and i only got it a couple of moths ago and treat it like gold!!!
lachy - Apr 15, 2010 06:54AM
dadaaadum you got a dodgy ipod then i think, mine has never messed up once until now and ive had it for 8 months. none of my friends ones have every broken either, maybe once.

I tried that and it didnt work either! I don't use iTunes..I use Limewire (similar to iTunes but songs are free) and I loaded all my previous songs last year successfully. I recently got about 50 new songs, plugged up my iPod, made the sync list and everything else using Windows Media Player (the system on my computer I use to sync music to my iPod) and it always says my iPod isn't connected. I've tried resetting and different USB cords, but my computer still won't recognize it! Any ideas as to why??

I just got a new PC laptop and my ipod isn't being recognized. I have re-installed itunes, restarted the computer, done updates, restarted the ipod, even put it in disk mode, but nothing has worked. The USB drive is fine because I can hear a ping when i plug it in and take it out. The ipod will charge, but it is as if the computer doesn't know it is there. The ipod works just fine on my other PC and will sync. Can anyone tell me what i am missing here? Is there something other than itunes that I need in order for the computer to know what to do with the ipod?

The same thing happens to me and I am getting ticked. Windows 7 on a new computer. Ipod classic charges but doesn't exist on my computer. I have wasted 10 hours following and refollowing all the recommendations. My blackberry software won't work either. Grrrrrrrrr!!!!
David - Feb 3, 2010 10:53PM
I think I finally found the solution! My new Windows 7 computer was recognizing my ipod touch as a camera and it wasn't showing up in itunes. Did an uninstall and reinstall of the latest itunes and still nothing. Turned off Autoplay and still no luck. Finally after searching forum after forum I found the solution below and it has worked. Hope it helps.

1 connect your ipod and open itunes

2 open the device manager

3 look for the portable devices and find the apple ipod or wherever that is listed on your pc.

4 once u find the apple ipod do a right click on it, click properties, then the drivers tab and then click on update driver software

5 take the manual option and browse for this folder on your computer C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers

6 double click on the driver folder and your ipod should immediately respond.

You rock!! I have been at this for two days. Apple customer service sucked! In fact they disconnected me. I followed your directions and everything is working perfectly. Thank you. You earned some karma points today. I will definitely pay it forward!

Still an iPod fan
BigThurlDavid - Feb 14, 2010 11:23AM
Hi,

I have done what you have suggested, and it then says that the best software for the device is already installed, but itunes still won't recognise it. when i have plugged it into a relatives pc, it shows up but not on my laptop. I recently rebooted the laptop and wonder if this is a problem, any ideas?

cheers

I have been trying to set up an iPod Touch for 5 days now, the last of some major problems was the pc installing the iPod as a camera and itunes not recognising it at all. David's instructions worked instantly. Can't tell you what a relief it is as it is my daughter's birthday tomorrow and this was the last night of sitting in front of the computer trying to get it to work properly. My husband was ready to throw it in the bin (I expect he still will if anything else goes wrong with it). Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
Jodi - Apr 18, 2010 06:30PM
David! What if when you go to find Apple...you have nothing anywhere? I tried what you said...it's like my computer has no idea I even plugged in my iPod? (nano 5th generation) My ports are fine it acknowledges everything else I plug in and I bought a new usb. But on both my home PC and my laptop theres no response?!?!?!?
eddie - Jun 3, 2010 11:10AM
same with me
DianaDai - Dec 27, 2012 02:06AM
I did everything you said David, but while browsing through files I got to Mobile Device Support and there was nothing under that with the word Drivers in it. I already went the other way through Device Manager as well to update drivers, and it said the most recent drivers for this were already installed. It STILL doesn't show up on my Computer, however, and I am at a loss. I should mention I have the Ipod touch, and run it on Windows 7. I also can't for the life of me download itunes because of an error reading:
There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

I believe i've tried everything, except- obviously- the one thing that will work- whatever that might be. I was able to successfully remove all Apple programs from my system and reboot, and tried installing itunes again to no avail. If anyone has any ideas as to what I can do to fix this, I'd be much obliged. I'm done wasting days and shedding tears over this malarky 0.0 Thanks!

This just started for me out of the blue. I've been using my nano on this laptop for over a year and all of a sudden there is no recognition whatsoever. I updated iTunes, rebooted the iPod and nothing. The only thing I can think of is that windows recently updated a bunch of stuff. I don't know what else has changed since the last time I had it plugged in.

Not sure at all what to do....I've done the 5 R's.

sami - Jan 18, 2010 07:53PM
actually, itunes does store your music you purchase from them. If you install itunes and reinstall it and you login to itunes just click on purchased and you can re download them for free.
shane - May 5, 2010 02:07AM
wrong! they stored your downloads in itunes media folder in C:\ driver.
if you download those music again, they will charge you again.

Why don't you move your songs to your Macbook? Your old pc might got problem with its usb port. Or the usb device got something wrong.

As I know some program can read files from inaccessable drive. This one http://www.icare-recovery.com

when you plug your ipod into a mac computer it automatically rewrityes it to mac formatting. if it doesn't read on a windows laptop its because it is mac formatted.
