Unexpected Shutdown Problems

Hello,


I am having unexpected shutdown problems. My computer shuts down as soon as it begins to boot up after being totally unplugged from the wall and turned off for days. When it feels like being nice, it will boot up and let me use it for hours sometimes even days. I have opened it, cleaned it thoroughly (it looks new inside), checked all connections and still have the same problem. I have a Compaq Presario S4100NX purchased July 1997. Could it be the battery causing the problem? The power supply has been tested and is running like a charm.

A battery will not cause that kind of problem. It's 'probably' a flaky connection on the motherboard or in the power supply.
You could try reseating the motherboard power connector. Power down and pull the AC plug first.

If it fails when cool and runs fine after it warms up, that's a pretty good indication of a poor connection.
